No direct experience, but I have seen references to 'chips' for sale that apparently install somewhere on the cartridge and circumvent this issue. Don't remember where, but probably on some cartridge vendors site.
Apparently, this is the wave of the future and, if Steve S is right, if they tell you they're going to rip you off, it's legal. It seems there is only a hodge-podge of old laws to attempt to stop this consumer abuse. Have read about International Harvester making it impossible for farmers to fix their own very expensive equipment due to similar 'software' issues...and whole fields of crops have been lost because of it.
