<<<A person can be known by a variety of names or variations thereof (which is why nearly every package has some sort of AKA statement) and still be the same person. They are who they are.....The problem is that she doesn't have satisfactory proof that she's the same person, using evidence that we are allowed to accept. In that case, I'd probably walk.>>>

Exactly!! I absolutely agree with you and that's what I've tried to articulate (and did a poor job at it) - you did it beautifully, thank you. People can use and be called different names in life but a Notary can only identify the person named in the document.

That's what I meant by the person needs to pick a name and get ID in that name because a DMV won't issue DLs in several aliases and the Notary (in CA) is only able to identify the person NAMED in the document. And "satisfactory" is NOT because they *say* they use another name or nickname. Satisfactory evidence is what our handbook says we can accept which are the gov't issued forms of ID.

Identity theft and fraud are so bad that when I went to pay a bill, I had to show ID that I was the same person as the name on the check and payment coupon (I posted about this in Leisure).....HUH?!?! I'm giving money, not cashing a check.

Imagine how worse off things would be if a person needs their signature notarized and their gov't issued ID says Jane Marie Doe and the paperwork says Gladys Elderberry and they "tell" the Notary, "That's still me, I've been using that name for years, here's a utility bill with Gladys Elderberry. And the Notary says, "Ok, I just need to identity the human in front of me since I'm not responsible for the content of the paperwork. Civil code 1185(i) says we ARE to the extent that the person making the acknowledgment is the person NAMED in the document.

Yikes, yikes, YIKES to any California Notary who accepts a person's "word" that they are someone other than the name on the gov't issued ID, when that name is not the name in the document. The TC is NOT the SOS and their Name/Signature Affidavit form is for THEIR usage alone and not to be used by a Notary to identify a signer. JMHO
