Further, intent, or state of mind, is not an element required for impeachment.
Impeachment is, at its heart, a political process, and was so intended by the founders. It is a separate process from the judicial process that judges criminal offenses, however much Trump may try to drag his robed lapdogs into the matter. A president can be impeached simply for being incompetent and carrying out the duties of his office with the best of intentions and no thought whatsoever of violating the law. Certainly a president as manifestly unfit as Donald Trump can be impeached, and should be convicted, in my view.
It would be a heart-wrenching abdication of its constitutional responsibilities if the House fails to initiate impeachment proceedings. Wait to get an unredacted Mueller report. Wait to get the supporting evidence. Wait to hear from the more significant witnesses. But for God's sake, get busy doing what what you swore an oath to do -- govern my country. You've had the grounds to do it for over a year now; do it, please. |
