I think the "military parade" he promised didn't happen was because of concerns about what the tanks would do to the streets of DC. I'm pretty sure the weather was also a factor. Although I saw pictures and footage of the flyovers (still can't figure out why that had to include one of the two planes that are called Air Force One when POTUS is on it, since he wasn't on it at the time), I haven't seen any footage of an actual parade.
And yes, it didn't turn out to be the political spectacle that some feared, but it was still a partisan event. Trump sorta managed to stick to the teleprompter, although he was freelancing when he started talking about the Colonial Army taking over the airports and then being able to see the rocket's red glare over Fort McHenry (which happened about 30 years later). And you know that the video of his speech is going to make it into the campaign - on both sides.
