The election result in North Carolina's CD#9 is on hold and will not be certified while an investigation is ongoing. The Republican (!) in the race is accused of hiring someone to coordinate the stealing of mail-in ballots in the general election. An independent review of the ballot totals showed an unusually large number of mail-in ballots for the Republican candidate, who won by only 900 votes. Ballot totals in the primary suggest this happened in the primary election also.
Workers went door to door to voters who requested an absentee ballot, claiming they were sent by the district to collect them. Several voters reported that they were asked for their ballot even if it wasn't completely filled out. The ballots were then put into envelopes that were not sealed. Some ballots were signed as required by NC law, while others were not. It's unclear if the ballots were then used fraudulently or just discarded.
NC's Voter ID law - which is based on the mistaken belief that in-person voter fraud is rampant - would have done nothing to prevent this from happening.
