This cycle is pretty accurate and we are almost to the end of it.
From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance From abundance to complacency; From complacency to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage
With the addition of 31,000,000 Americans being supported by giving them tax payer subsidized health care benefits they now can live on tax payer provided welfare, tax payer provided unemployment extensions and what we’ve created is a vast majority of the country dependent on the gifts from the government paid for from the money collected from the tax payers.
The problem is that the more people that become dependent on the government, the fewer workers and income earners that pay taxes; the fewer entrepreneurs that generate jobs, and the greater demand for higher taxes from an ever decreasing tax paying group. This is the next step that goes back to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Social Security (perennially in financial trouble), Medicare and Medicaid (also perennially in financial trouble) and now we’re going to add 30 more million to the doll from the government.
New research published in the Yale Journal of Industrial Ecology looked back at how things have gone since the initial 1972 report and concluded that we could indeed witness the collapse of civilization as soon as the year 2040. But that’s only if we continue our business-as-usual approach to resource extraction and overexploitation — suggesting that there’s hope for society as long as we can change course.
