At this point, I think every living past POTUS or VPOTUS is frantically searching through boxes.in the basement and garage...
I think that's where the problem ends - POTUS and VPOTUS. No one else can leave the SCIF with classified documents, but they cut some slack for those two positions. That's a hole that Congress has to plug through legislation that codifies the way ALL public officials handle classified documents.
Still, there's a massive difference between doing it purposely like Trump did and what Biden and Pence (or more accurately, maybe, members of their staff) did. In two separate interviews a few months ago, Pence was asked if he ever took classified docs home, and both times he answered "No". I believe that, just like Biden, he had no idea the documents were there. And, just like Biden, as soon as they were discovered to be in his possession, he immediately did the right thing and returned them.
Trump, on the other hand... I'm not the only one who thinks he was planning to sell some of it to the highest bidder, because that would be very on-brand for Trump. I just hope that what happened with Biden and Pence doesn't divert attention from what Trump was doing. |
