Re: What could possibly go wrong?

When discussing a specific piece of legislation or actual law, posting a link to the actual text of the specific bill/law would be helpful, on so many levels. Not only for the reader, but also for the poster, as the actual text can usually debunk any of the partisan political (intentionally incorrect) talking points the opposition party and the media push. Viewing the actual text would, hopefully, also help in cutting down on partisan posters posting misinformation. Presumably, if a (reasonable) poster actually reads the bill/law for themselves, they would spot such blatant lies about it themselves and would not intentionally post things they knew were not true, unless they were clearly a partisan hack with no integrity.

Link to the actual text of the bill:  http://legiscan.com/TX/text/SB1993/id/2797096

Let's look a some of the Misinformation (&/or intentionally false political talking points) in the OP.

#1 "...a bill that would allow the Governor to overturn..."
Per the headlines alone:
** NBC reports that it would be the SOS, not Gov. http://tinyurl.com/2ywhtcw4
** ABC reports it would be the Gov http://tinyurl.com/yr6k29ns
** The Hill reports it would be the SOS   http://tinyurl.com/4ewz3mcd
** Democracy Docket reports it would allow "The State"   http://tinyurl.com/mw8d24cu
You get the picture; but some still claim that there is no bias in the media
The text of the one page bill gives the actual answer of "who" can do what.

#2 "...it's (Texas) 256 counties ..."
** Texas only has 254 counties http://tinyurl.com/2p87mn9a

** Yes, it is a minor thing, however, by not pointing it out is how factual misinformation is allowed to continued to be spread.

By now, it should be obvious that "reporters" and entertainment talking heads on the evening cable channels are not willing to actually fact-check even the simplest or most obvious of things, unfortunately, today it really is up to the readers to take an extra 1-3 minutes to Google/Bing even a few of the basic points to help them decide just how honest the "news" they are reading actually is.

#3 "The pretext for the bill ... the election went off without a major problem..."
** That whole paragraph sounds 'nice', however, taken as a whole, it is far from true. There were many major issues in Harris county last year during the primary and mid-term elections. Again, a simple search will show this if someone doesn't happen to remember the national reports alone on the issues.

** There were ballot PAPER shortages (the paper needed to scan ballots), there were also paper ballot shortages; paper ballots are NOT used for ONLY when there are issues with voting machines, some voting places did turn away voters during voting hours (i.e. they were closed), some voters were  told they had to go to a different location if they wanted to vote after arriving at their designated voting locations, and there were several other actual issues. This is the same Texas county which, on its own, illegally, according to Texas laws, changed voting "rules'/laws during the 2020 elections.
To attempt to claim that there are no issues for Texans, other than it being largely a Democratic leaning county, is simply an attempt to deflect and distract from the actual, and legal, election issues in this, and other, Texas counties.

Here are just a few examples of news reports about some of the actual issues:
** A short news video report highlighting some of the issues http://youtu.be/E6xT1FQhMI8

** More votes than registered voters http://youtu.be/O_Et40-Vl0g

** 10,000 mail-in ballots NOT COUNTED in primary in Harris county http://youtu.be/YyxGEohQu7E

** Confirmation of "thousands of voters being turned away" http://legiscan.com/TX/text/SB1993/id/2797096  0

There are many more results, this is just a small sample to prove the issues were not imagined, as some political hacks would like people to believe.

There have been issues with voting in Harris County, Texas regardless of what political party has been in charge of the county (i.e. issues under both Dems and Repubs).
