Fortunately Colorado has learned a lot since Columbine and have implemented lockdown and lockout protocol procedures.
Lockout is when there are issues outside the building — most likely police activity which could pose a threat such as a police chase, wild animal in the vicinity of the school, etc. Doors are locked and business as usual inside school and no class interruption.
Lockdown is a threat inside the school. Students and staff are secured inside the school. During lockdowns teachers are not teaching. Students and staff safety are top priority. Parents, relatives, lookie lous are not allowed on school property. This is not only for their own safety, but so first responders, whether police, fire, emergency vehicles have ability to maneuver so control of the situation can happen. Kids are not allowed to leave the building, and when they do, it is controlled by police allowing only a certain number at one time. Many times they are bussed to an offsite location where parents are instructed to wait. |
