My license expires Jan. 16th. I've received my renewal notice from DMV including list of "REAL ID" requirements:
1. Proof of identity (such as birth certificate, valid U.S. Passport, or permanent resident card)
2. Proof of Social Security number (SSN card, W-2 or paystub with full SSN)
3. Proof of CA residency (2 documents, such as home utility bill, vehicle registration, property tax bill, or mortgage or lease agreement)
4. Proof of name change (if the name on your identity document is different than the name on your application)
First available DMV appointment was 12/31st at 3pm. The plan is to take my U.S. Passport, SS card, utility bill and vehicle registration and the printed requirement list (just in case they try to give me any grief!). Oh! and let's not forget the $37 renewal fee ………. 
If there's still a problem after all that, guess I'll just be using my passport when traveling.
