Re: How to meet a new dog.

Love the dogs, even the nippy ones...I walk in, showing no signs of hesitation, I say hello to the dog first, but I don't reach out or down to them, talk to the owner, and walk right by them. After we sit for a bit, I'll drop my hand, they come over and best friends, then have them many times at my feet with their toy, their head in my work bag and made a new BFF. Cats the same way. The shy ones usually end up coming over for a greet. No animal wants to be forced or pressured into meeting anyone, being touched so just let them do it on their terms, but acknowledge them when you arrive and move on. Just what works for me.
