I've had GNW jobs at places with "guard dogs", oftentimes pitty breeds. The owners are more worried that I'll be afraid than I am of the situation. I do what the OP suggested, let them come to me.

I've even had to walk around one big guy laying on the floor to get to the wheelchair of the signer. I looked at the dog, he looked at me. I said, can I go by? and he laid his head back down. I like those kinds of encounters when I get their permission.
