If you've never picked a variety of fresh lettuce leaves allowing more leaves to grow, you're missing out. Do this on your small patio, in the snow.
I am an experienced gardener. I have a hot house, I have heating pads, potting tables, seedling racks, domed plastic containers, and much more. I won't use any of that this year. I'll do this instead.
Take this link just a step further. Put the container in a small decorative pot on your patio in the cold and basically forget about it except for adding a bit of moisture if needed. At the right time cut off the top of the container so you just see a nice pot and enjoy the fruit of your non-labor.

From patio to kitchen!
Obviously, you can also transfer these to a garden bed in the Spring.
