Become a Rhode Island notary public with Notary Rotary, Inc.

Qualifications:

To become a Rhode Island notary public an individual must meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Be a resident and registered voter in the State of Rhode Island, or
• Be an attorney who is a member of the Rhode Island bar association, or
• Be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Term of Appointment:

A Rhode Island notary public commission is valid for a period of four (4) years, unless resigned or revoked sooner.

Step 1: Download and complete the Rhode Island notary public application

Complete the application according to the provided instructions. If you are not a member of the Rhode Island bar you will need to have your application signed by a member or staff of the board of canvassers to certify that you are in fact a registered voter. The certificate of engagement on commission must be completed and signed by a commissioned notary public or justice of the peace.

When you have completed the application, mail it and an $80 filing fee to the Office of the Secretary of State. Checks must be made payable to the Secretary of State. Return the application and filing fee to the following address:

If the notary public section approves your application you will receive your Notary Commission in the mail in approximately three (3) weeks. Your term will expire four (4) years from the date of commission. A renewal form will be mailed to you at the address listed, so please contact the office if you change your address.

Although Rhode Island does not require notaries to put seals on documents, it is generally prudent for a notary public to do so. Some other states require notaries to use a seal as do certain corporations or government agencies. Since a notary public will not always know how or where an instrument he or she is notarizing is to be used, it is safest to always use a seal or Rhode Island notary stamp. The same applies to a journal or record book of notarial acts. There is no state requirement, but it is highly recommended. A journal or record book is a good way to provide proof if one of your official acts is ever called into question.
