Colorado notaries public are appointed for a commission term of four years.

Step 1: Download the Colorado notary application form, instructions page, and law primer.

Before becoming a notary or renewing your commission, you must carefully read the Notaries Public Act (Title 12, Article 55, Colorado Revised Statutes, Parts I and II).

The application form, instruction sheet, and legal primer needed to become a Colorado notary public is available for download here: Colorado Notary Application, Instructions, and Law (Only Available in PDF Format).

Print all of the documents, then read the law. If you meet the qualifications and have read and understood the law, the next step is to complete the notary application.

You will need to arrange for the services of a notary public as the application requires you to sign a notarized Affidavit stating you are a US citizen, a Permanent Resident in the US or are lawfully present in the US pursuant to federal law. You can find a notary in your area through the following link to the "Find a Notary" feature from Notary Rotary, Inc. here: http://www.notaryrotary.com/agent/find_a_notary.asp.  All you need to do is enter your ZIP code, or a neighboring ZIP code, in the PostalCD box and click search. This should provide you with a list of notaries capable of handling this job. Alternatively, your bank or credit union should have notaries on-staff who can assist you.

Make sure that the notary fills in the notarial certificate, applies his or her notary signature, and places the commission expiration date and notary seal on the application. Check that the notary's signature matches the seal. The Secretary of State rejects many applications because the certifying notary's signature does not match the notary's seal.

Fill out the application completely; following all instructions carefully, any errors on the application will delay processing. Please do not hesitate to contact the office of the Secretary of State of Colorado, 1-303-894-4871, if any questions should arise once you have reviewed the law.

Please be advised that the information you provide on your application becomes public information.

Step 2: Prepare and send application materials to the Colorado Secretary of State.

The items you will need to send to the Colorado Secretary of State include the following:

  • The application form, completed according to the instructions provided.
  • A photocopy of both sides of your identification, appropriate identification includes:

o       Colorado driver's license or Colorado non-driver identification card,

o       US Merchant Mariner card issued by the US Coast Guard, or
