Qualifications:

A prospective Louisiana notary must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a resident citizen (registered to vote in the parish of residence) or alien of the state
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Take and pass a written exam in the parish of residence. Anyone licensed to practice law in the state is exempt from the test. See Title 35:191.

Step 1: Contact your Parish Application Committee and download and complete the notary public examination application.

Each parish has their own application process. The contact for your Parish's Application Committee will be able to instruct you as to the application process in your parish. You will need to download the most recent notary contact list. In addition to your parish's application there is a notary examination application, which will have to be filled out by the applicant, approved by the Parish Examining Committee in the applicant's parish of residence, and mailed to the office of the Secretary of State with the examination fee of $75.00. This application and fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. The mailing address for these items follows.

Pursuant to Act 423 of the 2006 Regular Louisiana Legislative Session, the notary examination will be administered by the Secretary of State on the first Saturday in June and December.

The Secretary of State must receive the applicant's Notary Examination Application, which has been approved by the Parish Application Committee along with the examination fee of $75.00, on or before forty-five (45) days prior to the date of the examination.

Step 3: Order your supplies from Notary Rotary, Inc.

Louisiana requires all notaries publiuc to purchase either a $10,000 surety bond or $10,000 errors and omissions insurance before being commissioned. There is however no legal requirement to purchase and use a Louisiana notary seal or to maintain a journal of notarial acts. It is generally recomended that one make use of these items both for the sake of convenience and, in the case of a journal, evidence if a notarial act is ever called into question.

To order, please visit our store by clicking on the following link: Louisiana Notary Supplies. Choose Louisiana from the drop down menu and enter the store. Fill out the required information and place an order for your surety bond or errors and omissions insurance, official Louisiana notarial seal, and any other supplies you may need.  Your order will be processed as quickly as possible and will usually ship in less than three days.

Step 4: Check the Notary Filings Requirement Chart and collect the items necessary for appointment.

In order to be commissioned by the Secretary of State on behalf of the Governor, the following documents are required.

See Notary Filing Requirements Chart for instructions and more information regarding these documents and where they need to be mailed.

Step 5: Check the Notary Database for your information and begin your duties as a Louisiana notary public.

Once you have completed the above steps you will need to periodically check the official notary database until you see that you are listed as an active notary public. You do not need to wait for your commission information to arrive in the mail; you may start on your commission date, which can be obtained from the Notary Database.
