Become a South Dakota notary public with Notary Rotary, Inc.

Qualifications:

The Secretary of State may not appoint, as a notary public, any individual who has been convicted of a felony.

Any applicant for the position of South Dakota notary public must be a South Dakota resident able to include a South Dakota address on the application.

Term of Appointment:

A South Dakota notary public commission is valid for six (6) years unless resigned or revoked sooner.

Step 1: Order your surety bond and application form, official seal, and other supplies from Notary Rotary, Inc.

Applicants for the office of notary public for the State of South Dakota must acquire a $5,000 surety bond, or arrange a personal surety, and an official seal as part of the application process. These items, as well as many other items, may be purchased from Notary Rotary, Inc. There is no legal requirement to keep a journal or other record of your notarial acts, but it is generally prudent to do so. A journal of your notarial acts assists you with record keeping and would serve as proof of what occured should a notarial act ever be called into question.

Step 2: Complete the South Dakota notary public application when you receive it from Notary Rotary, Inc.

Complete the application, and sign your portion of the surety bond form, making sure to include an impression of your seal in the appropriate place. When the application is complete send it and a filing fee in the amount of $30.00, made payable to "Secretary of State", to the following address.

If your application is approved the office of the Secretary of State will send your notary commission certificate and a copy of the South Dakota notary public handbook to you at the address listed in the application.  Only after you have received a Notary Commission Certificate issued by the Secretary of State, are you authorized to notarize documents.
