Become an Indiana notary public with Notary Rotary

Qualifications and appointment tenure:

An applicant for commission to become a notary public must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  2. Be a legal resident of Indiana (Ind. Code 33-16-2-1 (a))

No person holding a lucrative office or appointment under the United States or the State of Indiana can be a notary public; civil, school city, and town officials of the State of Indiana may serve as notaries public. These officials are prohibited, however, from notarizing any document in connection with the official business of such office. (Ind. Code 33-16-2-7 Supp. 2001)

No person convicted of a crime receiving a sentence exceeding six months imprisonment may be a notary public. (Ind. Code 5-8-3-1)

Notaries public are appointed for eight-year terms. (Ind. Code 33-16-2-1 (b)) A notary public has statewide jurisdiction but may not be compelled to act outside the limits of the county in which he/she resides. (Ind. Code 33-16-1-1)

Step 1: Download the Indiana notary public application and order the $5000 Indiana notary bond from Notary Rotary, Inc.  

Please visit the Notary Rotary online store by using the following link: Notary Supplies.  Choose Indiana from the menu, and enter the store for your Indiana notary bond, oath of office form, and application, this product includes a voucher for a $5000 notary errors and omissions insurance policy as well. To order, enter the required information, scroll down through the page to locate and select the bond and/or insurance products, and follow the instructions through checkout.

The application includes detailed instructions regarding how it is to be completed. Please be sure to follow the instructions provided exactly.

It is suggested that a notary use one of the following when choosing their official name:
  • Both his/her first and middle names
  • First name with middle initial
  • Initial and middle name along with his/her surname

Once you receive the application and bond form from Notary Rotary, Inc., complete it according to the provide instructions and prepare to submit the application to the Secretary of State.

Step 2: Submit the completed application, bond, and $5.00 fee to the Secretary of State.

The completed application, including the oath of office and bond, should be forwarded to the Secretary of State with a fee of five dollars ($5), payable to the Secretary of State, in the form of a check or money order. Do not send currency in the mail.

The Secretary of State will forward your commission to you, or to your surety company, if requested to do so by enclosing a self-addressed return envelope with the application.

Step 3: Order the remainder of your Indiana notary supplies from Notary Rotary, Inc.

Once you have received your commission information from the state you will be able to return to the online store at Notary Rotary to order any other supplies you may need. If you are planning to redeem the voucher for errors and omissions insurance that is included with the bond and application forms, you will need to follow the instructions on your invoice. The State of Indiana requires all notaries public to own and use an official Indiana notary public seal when performing any notarial act. Although there is no requirement for Indiana notaries public to keep a record of their notarial acts it is recommend. The Modern Journal of Notarial Events was specifically designed for notaries public and contains features not available in other journals.  A record of notarial acts can help to provide evidence of what transpired in the event one of your notarial acts is called into question. After you have determined what supplies you will need simply place the order exactly as you did when ordering the bond. When you receive your supplies from Notary Rotary you will be prepared to undertake your duties as an Indiana notary public.
