IRS warms of tax fraud phone calls
Posted by sueharke at 11/1/2013 11:27:00 AM
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service warned on Thursday about a growing tax scam in which fraudsters display an IRS phone number on the intended victim's caller ID and demand money.

IRS rule that may affect you.

Anyone have a small business on this forum (silly question)? The according to the IRS under the new repair regs, taxpayer's need to have accounting procedures in place by 1/1/2014 if they want to take advantage of the de minimis safe harbor election.

To do so, just get a binder write some policies for your business. Here is a sample to meet the de minimis requirement. I didn't write it, but modified a good one I found elsewhere online. The same may be said for your credit limit policy for how large each companies A/R is before not doing any signing for that respective company/person.

Sample Procedure for Business Owners:

It is the accounting procedure of {Name of Business} to expense, for book purposes, amounts paid for units of property with a useful life of 12 months or less; or a cost less than the amount specified under Income Tax Regulation 1.263(a)-1(f), currently $500.

It is the accounting procedure of {Name of Business} to expense all incidental materials and supplies. We expense all non-incidental materials and supplies that are less than the amount specified under Income Tax Regulation 1.162-3(c), currently $200.

Are SS like HR?
Posted by sueharke at 10/29/2013 11:16:00 PM
I read several blogs online or through my email. One blog is from NICK CORCODILOS called “Ask the headhunter.” In his Oct 29 blog he wrote about how HR is making employment difficult by not allowing companies to hire directly. I wrote the author and asked for and received permission to post a link to this issue of the blog. It seems to me that this blog explains how Signing services and XYZ are hurting independent Notary Public's. When reading the blog, it seemed to me that HR is like the SS. Hopefully, you will like what your read. If you like what your read, please let Mr. Corcodilos know. Also, let him know who posted the link as he would love to know how this information is being shared. If you like other articles in his blogs, I suggest signing up for his email list.

The link to the blog is “http://corcodilos.com/blog/6827/employment-in-america-wtf-is-going-on” (without the quotes).

I believe this belongs in the working forum as it might help fellow Notaries (new and experienced) understand the hiring process by business today.

Borrowers getting bad information from loan officers?
Posted by sueharke at 10/24/2013 12:01:00 AM
I recently had an interesting experience from my CPA hat for a real estate loan.

I told the client in March 2013 he was not required to file a tax return. The lender said he had to file one anyway or the lender did not make clear his other option of getting a letter from a CPA that he was not required to file. He was forced to file a tax return by the lender.

The loan office felt he more about tax law than I did, He said the potential buyer needed to file an itemized deduction schedule A. I wrote a letter back show that if I did the sch A, the client would wind up owing money instead of owing a tax of zero. I never heard back so that must have ended the discussion on the tax return issue.

I wonder how many other borrowers are getting bad information in the mortgage lending world today and having unnecessary costs to get a loan?

Article of IC vs employee status
Posted by sueharke at 10/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
This may be an interesting article as to why SS are trying to put rules in effect that could have notaries actually be considered employees, due to "behavioral characteristics." It is related to the business perspective of why states are so interested in having people misclassified as independent contractors, rather than employees be properly classified. Maybe the information is helpful to some notaries.

IE User read - Another security Flaw
Posted by sueharke at 9/28/2013 11:06:00 AM
If any notary out here uses IE, I suggest reading this.

SECURITY ALERT
A serious flaw in Internet Explorer
Users of Internet Explorer beware! Microsoft is sounding the alert on a flaw that could allow hackers to take control of your computer. It lets them bypass your security software - but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have some installed.

The flaw potentially affects every version of IE on every consumer version of Windows. So, no IE user is safe. Hackers are actually taking advantage of this flaw as we speak, so this is a serious one.

Microsoft doesn't have an official fix available, but there is a temporary fix. Here is the link to find out how to protect your computer and your personal information

Helping a person with no ID
Posted by sueharke at 9/4/2013 12:41:00 PM
There is a homeless vet that is a nice person. His problem is that he has no acceptable ID for CA. He needs to get a birth certificate to get a replacement SS card to get a DL. My question is can I use any of the following to help the process.

1. One Credible witness who knows me and the person (since I know the person too).
2. Two Credible witnesses who know the person.
3. Cannot do anything to help as a notary if the request for a birth certificate requires notarization.
4. Other option that my brain didn't consider Frown
