I don't know about the dell, but I can recommend the Brother HL-1440 cost about $100. A newer resion is out the HL-2040 is on sell at Office Max for $99. The 1440 was recommended by consumer reports.

I have it and love it, have had no problems printing edocs at all. I upgraded to the maximum memory and added the dual tray.

By adding the dual tray, does it allow you to use both letter and legal paper simultaneously? I have the 1700 as well, but am considering buying another printer so that I can print both letter and legal. Thanks for the info!

Re: About the 1440...

...it is not PCL compliant, so you may have difficulty with some e-doc progams. For $200, less if you research the web, you can get a Brother 5140 which is PCL 6 compliant.

Re: About the 1440...

I've printed from swifview, vmp, and dynamic dox no problems with the 1700.
