Each company have their own requirement. Some do not require invoicing, some only want one invoice made up per month, etc. You need to read the contracts of each company.
I make up an invoice for every assignment, for my record. I do not submit it to anyone if it is not required by the company or if only monthly statements are required. Keeping a pile of invoices in my receivables file helps me keep track of whats open.
