Backfound Checks

Is this something that will be required by all companies or by specific companies? I am considering becoming certified and the NNA is requiring it and has increased the fee by $40. If it is not going to be across the board I'd go through Notary Sources which is $69.95. Any info re: Notary Sources certification program and/or background checks in general would be appreciated. Thanks
