FTP Recc's for my website please
I'm ready to upload my website but I need to select an FTP. 1) If you had to choose between - a) Dreamweaver; b) Frontpage; c) Cupertino; or d) something else - which would it be? 2) I know most FTP's allow you 30 day free trial. But don't I have to eventually purchase an FTP so that I can continue to maintain my site? Or do people just keep signing up for a free 30 day trial from different companies? (PS: I did check SEARCH before posting this message.) Thank you for any input.

Whoever you host your website with should have ftp and file transfer software to handle this. Example: I host my site with Bravenet and they have FTP and upload/download capability. I pay $83.40/year ($6.95/mo) for hosting.
Here is my affiliate link if you want to check it out http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/template/index.php?csid=337&afilid=2261656360

I compose my web pages with EMACS or Wordpad and upload the files with Internet Explorer. Just use the web site address your web hosting company gives you for uploading, and put ftp:// in front of it instead of http://
Ok, this method takes a lot of getting used to, and is best for simple web sites, but there is no additional cost.

Thanks BarbaraL & Gerry...you mean no one uses Dreamweaver?
Gerry, I tried Internet Explorer for the very reason that it's free. It doesn't work well with sites produced by or with Directnic (at least that's what I'm told). BarbaraL, while I do have hosting included in my package, unfortunately I still have to find an FTP.

Re: ...you mean no one uses Dreamweaver
Dreamweaver, FrontPage, etc. are not FTP utilities, but web page design and publishing utilities. That is, as a part of the program, they allow you to 'publish' your website, which includes uploading the files to your webhost.
If you want a good, imo, FTP utility, I recommend CuteFTP (http://www.cuteftp.com/) from GlobalScape. I've been using their software for almost 10 years.
I do use FrontPage for my website designing, primarily because I'm used to it.

You'd do well to get used to Dreamweaver...
Frontpage is known to write some pretty ugly code PAW. Dreamweavers a bit of a pain at first, but not so bad, and my webhead friends say the end result is much better.
I only mess with webpages when I must, so I'm relying on second hand info for that comment.

I write my own code and use FP just as a vehicle. You're right, FP can write some pretty funky code.

Yep. Me too, Paul.
Gary, you can also strip the "funky" stuff out with a any number of free software which will "tidy" up the code for you. I usually don't bother, but it is doable.
Here is a tidy page: http://www.w3.org/People/Raggett/tidy/ Here is "Chami" which has "tidy" tools in it. http://www.html-kit.com/docs/hkt/windows/
I have Dreamweaver and all that jazz, too. FP is just easier for me.

Thanks PAW & Barbara
Since I saw PAW's posting first I used CuteFP. I seemed easy enough. Not sure how long it takes for me to view the site online but I'm going to give it a few hours. Besides I'm sleepy. I appreciate the both of you responding.

Re: Thanks PAW & Barbara
Tucows.com and Download.com both have programs you can use to upload your website to your server. Do a search on thier site for utitilities, FTP. FTP is just a program that does the uploading. It does not aid in creating a website. Both CuteFTP and WSftp are good programs. You said you aren't sure how long it takes to view your site after uploading .. if you did it correctly you would be able to see it immediately.
You can also search in the above websites for free html editors (I suggest wysiwyg editor if you aren't familiar with coding). I happen to create websites and also provide excellent hosting at extremely affordable prices. I'm even thinking of maybe making a hosting package just for my notary friends that is extremely cost efficient. Anyway, if you get stuck give me a holler and I'll try to help. ~Dianne

For FTP, CuteFTP is easy to use
For web design, Dreamweaver over Frontpage every day of the week.

I don't use any ftp that is embedded in the design programs. I prefer ftp voyager. I've tried so many of the ftp programs, and it is by far the best. But I have many other uses for it than just maintaining my website.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
Nearly every operating system (including Windoze) has a version thereof. You do NOT need to purchase anything in order to upload and download files. Anyone who would like a brief tutorial is welcome to send email to me. If there is sufficient interest, I'll create a Page on my Web Site.
