Ink smudges on sides of paper
I can't get my printer to stop making marks on the sides of paper. I keep trying to clean the toner cartridge and the drum, but nothing works. It is a Brother 2040, any suggestions?

Sometimes that happens when toner is about to run out.

Bad cartridge?
Same thing happened to me; I cleaned the printer's innards plus the drum but the problem was a leaky toner cartridge. Another sign is if the pages look gray. Change out the toner and see if it clears up.

I refill my own cartridges (I have an HP, though) and that's how I can tell when it's time to toss it and put in a fresh one. If you didn't refill yours, maybe you bought a reconditioned one (or got one by mistake)?? I can usually get 2-3 refills from one cartridge and it saves a ton of $$$!

Your drum is bad and you will have to buy a new drum. Same thing happened to me a few months ago with the Brother MFC 8860DN. Try ebay.

Be sure it isn't the cartridge before buying a new drum.
Try another cartridge first. I refill my cartridges and when I start to get those streaks I know it's time for a new one. Usually 4 to 5 refills.

I wish I could tell you anything different but
you need to replace the drum and this is the reason I will never again stray from Hewlett Packard as long as I am in business. I have learned my lesson the hard way.
Why Brother needs to have a drum for the toner cartridge to fit into I have no idea? I have 2 Brother MFC 8860 so I have a double dose of replacements.
I like the printing speed (30 pages per minute) but other printers do the same.

Re: It's the drum
I had the same thing happen a couple months ago. I replaced the toner & still had that "line" -- actually it was about 1/2" thick down the margin. Had to order a new drum.
