Whats up with google search?

I would often put unrecognized phone #'s into google and do a search, and find anything related to the number in question. Lately I am getting no results, or just links to pay directories Frown

Try this, most times it even shows a map

of where the number is registered.
Don't worry about the prefix, it works on most any number.

It has saved me from some shaky SS jobs that seem to roam around in vans and have no websites.

Major problem with tracing cell phone numbers

The cell phone number may be registered to be in one area, but in actuality, the subscriber may not live, work or have ever been there. My cell phone number, for example, is Tampa, FL (Hillsborough County), but I am not in that area. Actually, I could have gotten a number in almost any area code of my choosing, as long as the carrier had service in that area. (And I would pay for the service plans of that area.) So, it may be misleading, to a certain extent. (I know of one salesman who purposely got a cell phone number in a neighboring market so he could expand his territory. It worked too!)

Re: Major problem with tracing cell phone numbers

Exactly. I have had my number for years and at the time lived in Maryland. When I moved to Pennsylvania I didnt change it.

The link also will show landlines without trying to

stiff you for a few dollars. The roving SS will have a cell that for instance will be registered in Arizona, but they say they are in Michigan. To me it's another possible red flag to be considered when they use a Gmail or AOL account, don't have a website or a fax number and don't call back when you leave a message.

I have to agree here with the SS that use a Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail account. That's also a red flag to me but doesn't always prevent me from accepting jobs from them. It seems those are the most difficult to collect from, in my experience.
