Jan, I had AT&T and had the same problem. Hated them. We then switched our DSL service over to DSL Extreme, and it was fantastic... though it, of course, piggy backed our AT&T line.
In moving, we only had Verizon available... and the speed they could offer me was way too slow beause of my house's distant from the phone compnay... so we went with Time Warner. What a freaking NIGHTMARE it was to get installed. It was mostly because of the house itself... but also the aging cables from the power pole. The technician told us we were the only ones on that box using the phone and internet service (for now) and so our speed is quite nice.
The two are fairly comparable, honestly. If you stick with DSL... try calling DSL extreme.
