dumb question?

Do they make a laser printer that is dual tray and will automatically select between letter and legal paper? If so, what is it and what does it cost?

I use an HP2200 with 2 trays. It automatically selects legal and letter. It's my second HP. They last forever. I only replaced the first one, several years ago, because I needed a printer with more memory. The first one in still in daily use by the friend to whom I gave it.

HP 2840 is good

but it was expensive. (about $800 at the time). It is also a fax machine and copier, etc. It is three years old, and a workhorse. I have never had any trouble with it...
Good luck and no, it is not a stupid question. I had to research before buying and even some of the salespeople did not know about legal size, etc...

I just went to the HP site and learned that the HP Laserjet 2200 is a discontinued model. The HP P3500 is recommended instead.

You can get refurbished 2200's on e-bay

I got mine there 3 years ago - still going strong...

That's what I did. $68 on eBay for an HP2200 with dual tray - the second one was 500 pages and holds an entire package! Be sure and use the USB or A/B cable interface, not the parallel interface (I found out from experience).

Not a dumb question at all. What I got started I had no idea where to look for a dual tray printer & made some expensive mistakes.
I have finally ended up with a Brother HL-5250DNLT & love it for the speed (35 ppm!). I found that the toner is more economical than the HP's I used. I avoided Brother at first, because of hearing about needing to replace the drum unit. I'm not sorry I made the switch.
You may find the HL-5250DN at your local office supply, but they can always order the extra tray for you.

I have a HP1320tn and love it. It is dual tray, picks the right size paper and is great! No problems at all.

This is a GOOD question!

It's one of the basics that gets addressed here in passing a lot but never directly. There are some printers that won't do this...but many of them will.

I also have the Brother HL-5250DNT and I love it. It's a workhorse and makes printing tasks so nice.

Re: This is a GOOD question!

I too have a brothers 5150DLT and have had it for 3 years and just now replaced the drum. I used a drum from ebay and got the toner cartridges for $80 and no shipping savede me money and works great. Got it at staples 3 years ago

Re: This is a GOOD question!

I get remanufactured toner carts from LD Products (aka 4inkets). IMO the prices are great.
They also have the drums available.

Re: This is a GOOD question!

I use the Brother 8460. $100 discounted at Staples. I LOVE this Multifunctional printer! However, the drum IS QUITE COSTLY...upwards of $190.00, and the toner cartridges are pricey as well...especially if purchased at Staples...$74 for reg, and $92 for high yield...so, MW/VA's suggestion for purchasing at LD Products or the like is an excellent idea...and so much cheaper...Good Luck!

Do you refill cartridges?

I've seen so many positive posts about Brother printers recently that my HP-oriented mind is starting to open. Does anyone refill the cartridges for their Brother printers? If so, have you run into any problems with this? I've found refilling cartridges myself to be an enormous savings. If that's not an option with Brother printers, it would tip the balance considerably.

Also, how often have you had to replace your drums? Is it something you could easily do yourself or did it require a service call? My HP is still working fine, but I'm looking to upgrade - before it becomes a necessity. Wink

Also, for those of you who have a separate scanner/fax with a multiple page sheet feeder, any favorites or recommendations? Many thanks!

Re: Do you refill cartridges?

Yes, for several years from tonerkits.com
The brother cartridges I use (TN 550 and TN 580) already have the refill hole in them.
Tip: use a funnel to refill, and make sure the cartridge cap is on after refilling, and tape back into place.
Consumables like toner and drums can be bought aftermarket for much less than genuine Brother consumables, and although they don't last as long as the genuine products, their
discounted prices make it easier for me to have backups on hand. I have had 2 HL 5140s since 2004, and one MFC 8460, all have dual trays, the mfc has a sheetfed scanner and all of them have been very reliable.
