Basic Notary question filling out a signature Affidavit

My question is, who's name goes in the blank section below after the wording of........Subscribed and sworn (affirmed) before me__________________. Would it be John Doe, or would it be me the Notary?
.
.

This is to certify that my legal signature is as written and typed below.
.
.
John Doe
.
I’m also known as
.
.
John P. Doe
.
.
And that John Doe and John P. Doe
Are one and the same person.

I would write, "by John A. Doe".

I know it *looks* like it's intended for the notary name, but that info is on my stamp and I also always print my name under the notary signature line. I ALWAYS include the borrower name in my certificates, so that is the way I would handle it.

Correction....

Subscribed and sworn (affirmed) before me on (date) by John A. Doe who has produced a driver's license as identification.
What's required, in FL anyway.

Agree with Julie and Les on this one. If it said "....before me by _______ " then I'd put affiant's name, but lacking the "by", I put my name.

I'm very confused now, more then before. At first I thought it would be my name (the Notary).

Re: Correction: Agree with Linda and Les

It is your name. If it says "....before me___________" then the notary's name goes in the blank.

If it says ".....before me by_______" then it's the affiant's name.

It used to confuse me, too. Darned notary language anyway!

That would be "me," the Notary Public. I insert my

name, and if there is room, "My Name, Notary Pulbic."

"...signed and sworn before me..." John Doe didn't swear or sign before himself.

JMHO.

Doesn't anyone else find it scarey that notaries don't know

how to complete the basic notarial certificates?

Doesn't surprise me..... In Virginia all you do is read a little book and you are a notary.... The next thing you do is a signing to make a lot of money.... We read stupid questions all the time....

When I teach classes I always emphasize the importance

of filling out the certificate correctly.

I always do "certificate correcting" exercises and NO ONE ever gets them right. The point is to emphasize that you can't just "skim over" the certificate or just "fill in the blanks". You have to actually READ the certificate to find out what its asking you to do, to correct it to comply with state law, and to verify that its not asking you to certify anything you can't - like residency or age.

For experienced notaries it takes a few seconds to skim over a certificate and make corrections, but new notaries are overwhelmed. I wish our course was a week long training program rather than a three hour class. Process servers have to take a week long class on how to hand people papers... I think the role of notaries should be taken more seriously.
