How much would you charge?
To notarize a car title 60 miles away on a Sunday?

I wouldn't.
It's not worth it for me to go that far for any one page document. I would politely suggest that it would be more economical for them to find someone in that area. We can only charge $2 for a notarization. That's at least 2 hours of travel. I could not justify it! Why would you even consider it?

Just asking, I made $100 plus me and my boyfriend got to take a trip up to Reading & go kayaking in the Schuylkill River, the client seemed desperate & begged me was not able to find a notary in his area.

In my book, it is called taking advantage and unethical.
We are public officials and need to be ethical. I would have referred her to any of the databases and she could have easily found a notary on Sunday. Reading is not a small town.

In AZ, the SOS is very strict about charging so much.
Our current Governor, the Finger Wagging Jan Brewer, (the former SOS) believes that notaries should work for free. If somebody complained to the SOS about us charging such a high fee, we could be in deep doodoo!

I hope you are a Penn Dot notary...The notary handbook is pretty clear on what you can and cannot notarize on Penn Dot forms, and also what you charge per notarization. However, travel is up to you.

Nothing wrong ....
.. with turning a job into a "getaway," too. Just don't expect your "desperate" client to pay for your fun. $100 to notarize a car title? Yikes!
Whole thing sounds fishy to me, anyway.

Re: Nothing wrong ....
Not for me. Ive had folks from PA drive down here to VA to buy a car off craigslist and called me to notarize (even though our VA title has not notarization requirement on our titles) and they always ask what I charge. Luckily it was local so I only charged them to notarize and my travel to that particular area.

Re: How much would you charge? $$$
I told them the notary fee itself would be $5 I explained to them a travel & mileage fee would apply. Then he offered the $80 for time & travel & gave me a $15 tip. he stated the regular area notary went away for the weekend. could not find one.

Re: How much would you charge? $$$
Not that anyone would ever offer me that ['cause there's many hundreds of notaries between me and 60 miles in the only two directions I can go that far without ending up in the ocean or up a mountain...], but there's no way I would do that much driving for $100. Plus, it would be bare minimum 2 hours of my time (IF I was driving at 3:00 am... ), not counting gas, wear and tear, etc. I'd do what Shoshana suggested and probably refer them to this site.
If you just used the IRS deduction allowance amount for this year of $.56/mi, that would be the equivalent of a COST to you of $67.20. So for your 2++ hours of driving, you'd be left with $32.80, before allowing for taxes, let alone any overhead. But I know every area is different, as is the cost of living.

Re: How much would you charge? $$$
You can charge what your state allows for your notarization + a travel charge of your own will. I do not leave home for less than $25.00. Why in the world would they call you so far away? I would never accept...you drive and show up, and then they found someone faster, closer and cheaper.
