USPS Bulk Postage Rates
Posted by Michelle/AL at 12/26/2013 12:26:00 PM
I'll be sending out recurring mailers starting next week - high volume and would like for it to be as cost effective as possible. Have any of you check into USPS bulk postage rates? If so, what was your experience and what would you recommend, please?

Thank you.

Friendly Reminder: Check Your Reviews
Posted by Michelle/AL at 12/16/2013 11:36:00 PM
I received a call from a repeat GNW customer. When I arrived at her home she asked me if I had read her online review of my services. I had not. In fact, I'd forgotten all about that listing. Thankfully, her feedback was positive. But what if it wasn't?

I need to do a better job of reviewing the sites where my services are being reviewed. I don't want to be surprised. So many free listings of businesses include the ability to rate the party's services.

Also, don't be afraid to request reviews. They can go along way.

Alabama Photo Voter ID Law - Finalized
Posted by Michelle/AL at 10/30/2013 10:40:00 PM
The finalized version of this law has been posted on the AL SOS website. Quite a few changes were made to the original draft. The most notable change that affects notaries is that the Voter ID application form no longer requires notarization.

Alabama Photo Voter ID Law
Posted by Michelle/AL at 10/13/2013 9:30:00 PM
Alabama Notaries, have any of you been following this proposed legislation? I haven't. But today I was on the SOS site and clicked the link to a draft the proposed law. Several things caught my eye:

1. Voters will have a choice of going to the Board of Registrars to obtain the card; or complete an application for the card and have it notarized prior to being processed.

2. There is also mention of a "mobile unit" that will process applications and take photos of being applying for cards. The legislation refers to the mobile unit as being a "vendor".

3. In 2014 "at the first statewide election", if a person goes to the poll to vote but doesn't have proper ID, election officials at the poll can serve as credible witnesses and an affidavit must be notarized.

4. Legal representation for SOS has defined what acceptable ID will be to process and notarize these forms. I was suprised at what was on the list (if I read it correctly).

I think we should keep an eye on this. Unfortunately the "comment" period expired on 9/4. I would've like to have asked some clarifying questions about the whole process. Hopefully there will be some Town Hall Meetings later.

Alright, I'm going to attempt to link to the site:

http://www.sos.alabama.gov/downloads/press/17-9-30_Regs_6-28-13.pdf

If it fails to work, just go to AL SOS the hyperlink is on the main page near the center of the page: Alabama Voter Photo ID.

Those of us who are mobile notaries might want to be prepared. I'm not implying that there's a chance to make money on this. But I am implying that we may be called to notarize two new affidavits that we haven't seen before.

Intresting read. You'll need to go about half-way through the article to find mention of a notary being called in by the victim and minister. I hope the link works.

Notaries for Alabama - Birmingham Chapter
Posted by Michelle/AL at 9/16/2013 12:25:00 PM
On Thursday, 9/19 at 6 pm, a group of Alabama Notaries will hear from Ozie Stallworth, of North Carolina's Secretary of State office, and Notary Public Administrators. Mr. Stallworth is the Director of Electronic Notarization & Notary Enforcement. Notaries attending the meeting will be able to ask questions and hear first hand how NC handles complaints about notaries (common costly mistakes, etc.,) and other topics including electronic notarization.

If you have yet to attend one of the group's monthly meetings, this would be one worth checking out. We meet at Homewood Public Library. For more information, you can contact me.

More Notary Fraud
Posted by Michelle/AL at 7/15/2013 2:37:00 PM
If you can't trust a notary who can you trust? I'm hearing more and more about notary fraud. I can understand a notary overlooking getting a client's signature on a form. I call that a mistake - careless, perhaps, but a mistake nonetheless. But to knowingly commit fraud?!!! SMH

Earlier today I served process on a bank. When the bank manager saw on my business card that I also perform mobile notary work she said "we used to refer out to someone but we learned she was using that information to commit fraud". I didn't ask for details. I was blown away.

We chatted a little longer which gave me a chance to tell her more about me and my standards, etc. Since I have her business card, I'll follow-up later. I guess I need to prepare myself for a better response, should that happen to me again. Really, I got sick to my stomach sitting there hearing this mess. That notary had a good thing - referrals from a bank - but she had to blow it. I hope she didn't cause financial hardship on anyone.

Listen, if you want to cut corners and deceive the public, I can think of a few other careers for you to consider. Leave notary work to honest men and women, will ya? What you do (good or bad) reflects on the rest of us.

Wasn't it last month that we discussed in this forum a NSA and sold SSN's to someone for $25? Jeez Louise!!! This is getting out of hand. It angers me to no end.
