Back in October when the announcement of the SPW was made it described itself in the following manner,
The Signing Professionals Workgroup (SPW), a committee of lenders and title companies, has created industry best-practice standards for notaries handling loan signings - the Certified Signing Specialist Standards.
The National Notary Association (NNA), tapped by the SPW as an advisor and non-voting member, says SPW will implement the new standards over the coming months and anticipates the rollout will be completed by mid-2014.
According to the NNA, these standards were established to ensure borrowers have an improved customer experience and to comply with federal regulations regarding service providers.
If you have not check the SPW site recently there has been this change it now defines itself as
The Signing Professionals Workgroup (SPW) creates, maintains and promotes professional standards for Notaries Public who provide signing services in connection with the closing of a mortgage finance or real property transaction.
The SPW is an industry workgroup of the National Notary Association. SPW members include mortgage lenders, title companies, signing services, trade associations, and educators of, and background screening providers and companies offering supportive services to, signing professionals. Membership is open to companies meeting the qualifications for membership.
In the new change it now appears the SPW is not just a non voting member, but a workgroup directly affiliated with the NNA.
This seems to confirm much of the suspicion around the formation of the SPW.

Posted by Jose Ramon Maestre at 12/12/2013 6:27:00 AM | Recently a member of our group, (ANSA) reached out and spoke with the chairperson in charge of "third party relationships" at the OCC. We are also doing the same with the CPFB.
Hs conversation was about BGC requirements. The gentlemen at the OCC requested we come up with some specific concerns and issues we could provide him, that he could then answer about BGC. This is a cut from that email report on the call,
"His bottom line is there are no minimum standards published by the government, it is up the the Financial Institutions to do their own due diligence on the people who are critical and based on the assessed risk they present to it. He went on to state that the Appraisers and Home Inspectors were voicing the same concerns. Their organizations have been contacting them as well on their requirement to comply with this guideline, so it is not just the notaries. He said if we can or will come up with some critical questions to have answered he gave me his personal email for work and said if I would send those questions to him he would direct them to the body he called Retail Lending Folks who would reply to our concerns and questions. There is so much turmoil out here concerning what the requirements may or may not be for us as notaries in meeting the requirements." They have been trying to recruit SA in the Florida markets. I have copied part of their email.
They are all over YouTube with videos, and appear to use a MLM networking approach.
I have no personal experience with them but their approach and email give me reason to be suspicious and cautious. We are all aware of the many SS out to get SA to do work only to not get paid or have to chase the service down. See email below,
