More on BGCs
Posted by ajd/pa at 10/30/2013 8:57:00 AM
Earlier this year, I had my BGC done through NR. Thought it was fine. Just got around to sending
it to ULS as per their request. Got an e-mail back this morning with the following statement:

"I have reviewed your criminal background check and unfortunately it does not meet our requirements. Specifically, the “National Criminal Database” is not the same as a Federal Criminal Search. You can reach out to NNA for a background check (please make sure the report is after July 2013, as it now includes the Federal) or use Accurate Background, contact information below."

Not sure what to do now. Really do not want to go through XYZ as I am not getting enough business currently to make the expense worthwhile. Fortunately I do have a part-time job to help pay the bills (no, I do not use my employers supplies for my signings). I do miss doing closings as I enjoyed meeting the people in my area. Hopefully we will still be able to get some business if we don't bow to XYZ.

Just got my certicate from e-machines!
Posted by ajd/pa at 8/20/2013 7:11:00 PM
Just got in the mail today the certificate for the e-machines class action suit. It is a cert for $365 from their website. The redeem policy changed from when they originally send out the notices. originally it was from a different website where you could get everything from Kindles to desktops, now it is just e-machines and Acer products. Lots of stuff, will have to look it over, might end up trying to do the $62.50 cash offer.

Notary for opening safe deposit box
Posted by ajd/pa at 8/16/2013 7:28:00 PM
I am doing my first safe deposit box opening next week. I have looked at the archive to get some information of what this might entail and I have a better idea, but still have some questions. I know that each state is a little different but looking for general guidelines.
This is just one box (belonged to father of friend), being drilled by bank. Will the bank have the necessary forms? Do you all (who have done this) charge by the hour or flat rate? Am I actually notarizing anything and if so who signs the book, the bank person?
Thanks for your input.

general notary work and bringing your own witnesses
Posted by ajd/pa at 8/6/2013 1:35:00 PM
Got a call from a gentleman this morning for some general notary work for later this week. He said that it was a pre-nup and he needed to have 2 witnesses. Then he tells me that since this is a confidential matter, he was wondering if I could bring the witnesses. He does not want any family or neighbors to know what the document is. I told him that people don't need to know the document, they just need to witness the signitures. My question for the group is this: if you are bringing either 1 or both of the witnesses, do you charge extra and about how much? I don't want to take advantage of the man, but if I have to bring an extra person with me, I think I need to charge an additional fee.

hospital notarization
Posted by ajd/pa at 7/16/2013 7:03:00 PM
So I think that I know the answer to this one but I wanted to run this by the collective wisdom of the group.
Got a call from a friend of a friend to do a POA notarization. She explained the situation as her Dad is in final stages of illness. Lawyer has all the docs, Dad signed them in front of the lawyer, but they were never notarized. The complication comes that Dad is medicated/sedated and not able to answer any of my questions or even sign my journal. I told her that much as I want to help, I may not be able to, as Dad needs to appear in front of me. We can get any witnesses and get to the hospital, but the fact that he is not conscious is a big issue. Can the lawyer write something for me. Didn't help that the daughter started crying on the phone with me. We just lost my husband's step-mother, so I know what she is going through, but as my husband said to me, it is not worth jeopardizing my commission, even for a friend.
Any advice; should I decline, or see what we can do? Thank you in advance.

Phone consultation for adoption
Posted by ajd/pa at 7/15/2013 2:02:00 PM
I know something like this has been discussed here before, but I am having trouble finding it. Just got a call from a woman looking for someone to be with her for a phone hearing to complete an adoption. She was not sure if there were actually any notarizations to be completed but she was told that she needed that notary to be there during the hearing that would last about half an hour. Turns out that I have another commitment at the time (referred her to another local notary that I know) but was wondering the price neighborhood some of you might charge for this. Hourly? Flat fee? Or something else.
Thanks for any comments.
