New to the business

Hey everyone. I am brand spanking new to the business and have just started reading all the great stuff you have to share with each other. It has all been very helpful but at the same time I am getting nervous. I have yet to do my first signing as I have had to turn done a few because of scheduling conflicts.
I love to read all the advise you have for others as well as all your other info( political opinions) It seems like great support.
So what advise can you offer to this signing agent virgin. I have to admit I am afraid of my first signing. I feel like I won't know what to say to the company and may even cheap myself in fee. Help you experts!!!
By the way I am in upstate NY. Is there anyone I should stay away from?

Read ALL the posts of this forum, going back to the beginning. Do that with Gomobilenotary. Then find a job clerking at a 7/Eleven. (Just kidding about the 7/Eleven.)

I do not have political "opinions." I simply know some political truths, such as that all Republican officeholders are thievin', cheatin', lyin', murderin' scumbuckets and child molesters who are going to hell, and all Democrats are bound for heaven even if blue dresses sometimes need a dry clearning after a trip to the Oval Office.

"I have yet to do my first signing as I have had to turn done a few because of scheduling conflicts. "

I don't know how many a "few" is, but flexibility and availablity are key in this business. If you continue to turn down signings, don't be surprised if the companies stop calling you.

There are plenty of posts archived on this board about fees. You should be making a rate sheet right now, $1.25/mile, $50 minimum seems to be a pretty standard figure around here. My rate sheets took forever to make, but it was a one shot deal. I can quote a price in a second and not have to worry about whether I'm screwing myself or not.

There's not much to say to the signing company when they call - they'll ask you if you're available, either quote you a fee or ask what your fee is for that city (and if they don't, make sure you ask them what the fee is), they'll probably verify your fax #, email address, and doc mailing address, and that's about it.

If you have any questions for them, I'd advise that you don't say "this is my first signing ever". Something like "this is the first signing that I've done for your company" is just as honest, and they should know that all signing services have their own ways of doing things.

Beyond that, continue to read this board, make sure you know your notary laws, and accept that you probably will make some mistakes in the beginning, most of which should be easily correctable.

Thanks so much CaliNotary! I appreciate all the help I could get. I think I will be as successful as you all sound like you are. I will let you know how it goes.
