Hi, I am also a newbie. I think all you need is a lazer printer. I have a fax machine through my P.C. so, when I wnat print something it will connect to my lazer printer. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks so much I want to purchase quality equipment for a quality product and wasnt sure. I have been contemplating this purchase for about 2 weeks and will decide this weekend. I also have a fax modem with my computer but not a laser printer (i have an all-in-one) so I might have to upgrade my printer.
Thanks so much for the input, I am sure I will be accessing this site a lot for future advice!

I am also a newbie but I have done several loan signings, all have been e-docs. I bought the hp3015 laser, printer, fax all in one and it has worked great. I bought mine at Sam's Club for $278. Of course that was several months ago but they might still have them for that price. Good Luck in all of your signigs and may they be plenty!

You definitely need a fax machine to be able to send outgoing faxes. Sometimes you're required to fax back pages out of a signing package. I suppose you could scan them into your computer then fax them from there, but that would be a PITA and it would be much easier to spend $75 on a fax machine and be done with it.

I thought the same, just to purchase a fax machine and for the same reasons I would need to make outgoing faxes also. Just trying to make a good initial investment and was kinda lost as to what the minimun requirements were for others when they purchased their fax machines. Laser is definitely the type to purchase. Thanks again !!

I have faxed other things through my p.c. without a problem. It keeps the info in the system until I manually delete it.
I am currently in the market for a lazer printer. I also, brought the all-in-one printer (inkjet) before I knew it had to be lazer. Luckly, my brother works at a computer store so maybe he can give it to me at cost.

I have an hp LaserJet 1300 to print out email docs. It was about $300. It prints very fast and makes very clear copies. I have 5in1 Laser Printer/Scanner/Copies I paid $500 for that I have begun to use to scan and email. I have done more than 500 closings and the more you do it, the more you will appreciate the more expensive machines. When I started off, I only invested $100 into the printer but when you get the volume that I have, you will need a more expensive one. I use to change my ink once a week and now I change it once a month but the ink is now $140. My ink is good for about 6,000 copies before I have to change it.

Loretta Laser printers do not use ink, they use toner
For your laser printer, go to www.tonerkits.com and get the refills. The refill for the 1300 is $6.99 - and you can refill your cartridge 4 or 5 times before you need to replace the cartridge - and when you need to replace the cartridge, buy an empty one from www.tonerrefillkits.com - they are cheaper on the cartridges, but www.tonerkits.com are cheaper on the toner.

You and everyone else knew what I meant, I was in a rush doing my 6th closing for today when I wrote that. You make me feel like an idiot.
As for refill kits, I do not use them. The quality from the refill kits I have used are not as good as new toners. I have learn by trial and error. Also, the refill kits that I have used in the past have ruined a few of my printers.

You feel like an idiot because somebody made a gentle correction to one of your mistakes, complete with a smiley face? How low is your self esteem?

It must be pretty low right now. I have been working 9am-9pm for the past 5 days doing title work and closings so I apologize for taking an offense, especially with a smiley face on the end. And with a sixteen year old that is facing another knee surgery from being hit by a drunk driver, I am a little fragile right now. Sorry about that. Loretta

I have been using the toner refills for about a year now, and never a problem. (The refills for inkjets are another story - I would never use those again!)
I didn't mean to make you feel like an idiot Just see toner referred to as ink so many times!

I guess anything that is black and turns to words is still considered ink to me.

Re: Purchasing a fax machine Brand Newbie
I have a HP 1200 and use the toner refill kits from www.tonerrefillkits.com. I, too, was skeptical about using the refill kits because of the warranty issues and ruination of the printer. However, I have had the printer for over a year and have been refilling the cartridges. Very easy to do, reduces the cost of ownership and I haven't had any trouble with print quality.
FYI - I worked for a laser printer manufacturer for almost 10 years, I was VERY skeptical about using the refill kit. I won't use reman inkjet cartridges though in my inkjet printer.

Go and purchase Paperport 9 software and use your present fax machine or go and buy a new one and have it connected to your PC. Here's the sweat part of the software...When someone faxes you the papers the fax machine directs it to your computer which directs it to the Paperport software. Once this is done the software allows you to email it out, make it a PDF or print it to any laser printer. Now once all the papers are signed scan the documents and convert them to a PDF and email them back until you can mail back the hard copies. Guess what, your fax machine isn't tied up for 10,15 or 30 minutes on the documents being transmitted plus it saves you money on your phone bill.

I suggest brother MFC laser or inkjet..you can get free reviews on amazon.com
We have been using the Brother MFC line for 10 years...they far outweigh the HP models with speed, and the cartridges hold more ink and cost less. We now have a laser and 2 inkjets, they work great.
You can go to brothermall.com to see what models are most current. We just purchased a new 9700 MFC laser for $259 through Costco.

What "Signing Agency" are you representing?
While I agree that Brother printers are excellent I would advise against your recommendation on two fronts:
You said, "I suggest brother MFC laser or inkjet."
As a "Signing Agency" you should know that a LASER printer is the only acceptable printer for doing edocs. Of course, if you are not recommending the ability of doing edocs, then disregard this entire post. But, your statements may be very misleading.
You also stated, "We just purchased a new 9700 MFC laser ..."
Again, this is an excellent printer, but I would not recommend its use for edocs. Why? They only support PCL4 emulation. Some companies have already migrated to PCL5e and soon will probably be migrating to PCL6 which means this printer would not be able to support the printing of those documents. (I do know of one service that already requires that the printer support PCL6 and a couple of other services that require HP only printers.) Only HP printers have natively supported PCL engines and are the only printers guaranteed (by HP) to support all commands in the PCL specification.
I will say that I personally do not know of anyone with a Brother printer that has had a problem with printing edocs. I have heard of and seen posted, where people have stated they have had problems. But I look at it this way. Why take the chance? HP printers are guaranteed to support what the lenders and title companies throw at us. Will other vendors (including Brother) make the same claim for any printer they advertise as "PCL Compatible" and uses PCL emulated drivers?
