Question for Joan Bergstrom
Joan, I posed the question a day or so, but didn't get a response from you. The matter has come up again in a thread today. So, I thought I would be more specific this time, in the subject line and otherwise.
Is it really true that your business uses radio commercials that say there is a shortage of notaries in California? If it isn't, I'd really think you would want to put that calumny to rest, since it severely undermines your credibility -- and acceptance -- on this forum, and probably others.
Could we get a response?

Gee Hugh, I kind of interpreted her silence *as* the response.
I've definitely heard the commercials. I didn't realize that it notaryclasses.com was her site until you asked the question. But in no uncertain terms, these commercials do state "did you know that there is a shortage of notaries in California?" or something very very close to that exact wording.

Hugh,
This is interesting. You stated:
"Is it really true that your business uses radio commercials that say there is a shortage of notaries in California? If it isn't, I'd really think you would want to put that calumny to rest, since it severely undermines your credibility -- and acceptance -- on this forum, and probably others. "
What stations are we hearing this on in Texas?
You can email me or post, either way ....Do Tell!!!

Going on to say...
I endorse classes for new NSAs who need further enlightenment, but as far as a shortage of notaries, or NSAs in CA or TX I am not so sure about that!!

Brenda...
Hugh was referring to a poster from CA in another thread who mentioned he'd heard the commercials.

Joan is not the owner of notaryclasses.com.

Well she's definitely associated with it. From her notaryrotary profile:
"Certified Notary Signing Agent: APN/CSA, NSA, and 123 Notary. I teach students to pass the Calif. Notary Exam for notaryclasses.com."

I don't believe I, who started the original thread, attributed ownership to Joan. I don't know the ownership.
However, I do know that since I have been frequenting these forums, Joan has seized the opportunity on numerous occasisons to tout the agency. Whether proprietor, employee or contractor, she has urged new notaries and prospective notaries to enroll in her classes. Based on what I have read here, the promotions for those classes are duplicitous. And it seems to me, if she is prepared to promote a company with such question versimilitude, then her own veracity is open to question.

I'd taken that SA and notary is not at all inclusive since being a notary doesn't neccessary constitute one becoming a SA. IMO...its all about who's fast enough to butch the "cash cow" and go where the dough is.

Yes, Joan does work for notaryclasses.com. And as was previously said, one can be a notary and NOT be a Signing Agent. The ad advertises the need for Notary Publics, not Loan Signing Agents.
However, now that California has passed legislation that training will be mandatory come July 1, 2005, classes will be needed by new and renewing notaries, whether they are just Notaries or Signing Agents as well.
My additional $0.02 worth.

Garner defends Bergstrom thusly:
***The ad advertises the need for Notary Publics, not Loan Signing Agents.***
Forgive me, but I don't find that distinction reassuring. On what demographic study or studies is the assertion based? Further, if income predicated on signing agent opportunities is used to promote notary classes, it is deceitful to defend such promotions on the basis that they are directed at potential notaries public, not signing agents.
The original contention was that Joan had undermined her credibility here being a part of any organization that uses such duplicitous sales techniques. I think that still stands.

I agree with Hugh. The ads say that you can make $5,000 - $10,000 per month as a notary. Kinda hard to do that at 10 bucks a pop for regular notarial services.
Of course, if anybody knows any other ways to make that kind of money as a notary, other than being a signing agent, I'm sure we're all ears in here.
I think it's quite clear that Joan has no plans to respond or explain herself. Hopefully people like Sylvia will stop recommending Joan's materials to new signing agents. If she's going to make her money by these deceptive practices, she certainly doesn't deserve any additional business from the rest of us.

I can not for the life of me figure out why Joan answers other threads but, not this one Hughness. Maybe the truth does hurt like they say.
