Business Bureau Warns Against Tucson Signing Service

By: David S. Thun
NSA Now: Issue #27 — December 2004

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Southern Arizona is cautioning Notary Signing Agents across the United States to be wary of solicitations from a Tucson company that allegedly failed to pay for services rendered.
The company, Notary America, also known as Southwest Notaries, was the subject of multiple complaints involving nonpayment ranging from $75 to $500, said Tom Collier, president of the Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona.

"The individual dollar amounts are not that large, but a significant number of complaints, each for a relatively small amount, adds up to a lot of money," Collier said.

A company official told the BBB that the firm had suffered an embezzlement and that was the reason for nonpayment, Collier said. However, he added that the explanation was inconsistent with known procedures used by law enforcement during an embezzlement probe.
