A hard one to answer

I was asked by a borrower if I am paid well being a NSA after I completed the singing. I politely answered, its a part-time job and I don't get call all the time. The signing was from a lender, and it showed my fee on the HUD "Notary service=$150". Anyone had a run in with this situation?

Please comment...Thanks.

If it just says "Notary Fee" and doesn't have my name, then if asked (which is not normal) I usually say that the Notary Fee listed is what the signing service gets for providing the notary services, and I only get a small portion of a signing service fee.

If my name is on there, I would tell them that the fee covers more than the actual notarizations.

I tell 'em the money's better and the work is less than when I was a lawyer, and they shouldn't be fooled by the Ford out front: The wife took the Jag in to have the sunroof fixed. And I leave it at that. Americans respect money, even if they're paying it, more than they respect character.

That kind of a question makes me want to growl.

While I, like you, answer this pointed question with a nice and polite answer, I have a fleeting fantasy when asked that question in which I would flip to the URLA and say:

"I am glad you asked that because I am as nosy as you are. Though I have the information in the packet, I only look at the debt and income information on the loan app when people like you want to talk about what I make. It is a fair trade, I think. Mind if I take a peek? Then I will tell you what I make."

In reality, I could not ever be that outrageously rude. Is it just me, or isn't this a rude question for the borrower to ask the NSA? ( }:- [ ) JMHO.

I think they're just curious, maybe looking for a freelance-type business like NSA to get into themselves. I don't take offense at questions like that because I asked similar ones when I was looking for freelance-type work.

I've discovered that the country is divided into two types of people: those who mind the question and those who don't. If you don't want to answer it, a polite refusal is enough to keep me from pursuing it further.

Gracie,

You are so right. Thank you for bringing that position to my attention.

I am definitely interested in helping people work for themselves.

Usually I can tell if it is someone looking to get into the business of being an NSA (or a home based business) and I give them my card with my phone number, of course, and my email, and website address--tell them to look at the signing agent links, and see what they think and I will be glad to help them however I can.

I have never had anyone pursue it or call me. I have been disappointed in one case because this person was someone I really think would be a great asset to this industry.

Regards, Brenda

I totally agree with helping others. Matter of fact, I got into this business from an NSA who did the signing for my refi recently. I did real estate with him back then.

The reason I brought up this topic was because the borrower was quoted $7K payout from the loan but ended up with a $6k something figure. She got on the phone and call her loan officer. Didn't know what the guy told her but that was the question for me after she hung up. Of course, my fee was probably the last minute figure they put on the HUD.

Thanks all for your comments.

Ah, I see the situation now. You could say something like, "Oh, the notary fee on your list of charges is what the signing agency is charging you, not what I'm charging them." And let it go at that. Get right back to business if you don't want any more questions on it.
