Giving out SS# online
I am not sure if plugging in your Social Security Number on a Signing Company's website is such a good idea. If I have a good firewall in my computer can identity theft still take place? Is it better to fax the company a W9 instead?

Go to irs on web and apply for a" EIN" Number and you will not have to give your ss# out. The ein is given to immediately. Best of luck.

Can I have an "Employer Id #" when I operate as a sole proprietorship and no employees?

Yes. Anyone in business, even sole proprietors can have an EIN. Actually, as a sole proprietor YOU are the only employee. Visit the IRS web site (http://www.irs.gov) and do a search for EIN. Or go directly to this page (http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=97872,00.html). The first question asks if you have employees. The answer is YES, you are the employee.

What if the SS already have your SSN? Do you have to tell them you now have an EIN? Thanks!

You don't HAVE to, but I strongly advise it. Just send them an updated W-9 with a cover page asking them to please update their records.
