Stumped by Which Laser Printer to Purchase
I am really stumped by which printer to purchase. Many of you suggested the HP 1300 but I have read very mixed reviews. The best for the value seems to be the Brother 5150 DLT. My computer guy told me that even though hp has the actual pcl6 the other brand are compatible and he said it is like the days when we had IBM computers versus IBM compatible computers. I was about to buy this Brother but a colleague of mine told me that she has had bad luck with Brother printers. I DON'T want a multiple function printer. I want one that has two paper trays and prints very quickly without jams and I need one ASAP since my current printer is much too sloooooowwwww.

Pat: There's a pretty good thread beginning on message #3867. And, if that one is not enough to wear you out - hit the search button which Harry recently installed - it's a real dandy. (Lovin' it and Lovin' MoJo, Harry.)

I have 3 Brother Laser Printers and I love them. I have an HL-5040 with both the letter and legal trays. I have the MFC 4800 which is a Fax/Copier/Scanner/Laser Printer which I can forward all faxes to my Efax number. I recently purchased an All-In-One - MFC 8840DN which I purchased the additional legal tray. I have 2 computer systems at home and 1 in my car hooked up to my wireless laptop. I have a power inverter where I can run 3000 watts with 4 AC plugs.

Correction, I just ordered a Lexmark X6170 for Color and Photo printing, I have not used it yet. This does not count the 3 HP Deskjet printers that I don't use right now. Before I starting doing the Loan signing, I had my own retail business on-line - I sold out-of-print books on Amazon.com and my own website. I still do sell from time-to-time on Amazon and Ebay - its a good place to buy/sell equipment or buy and sell antiques. Buying and selling antiques is something I still do. I bought an antique clock in a local antique shop for $1700 and sold it for $6,000.

Take it from a SS. I would recommend the HP 3015. Best spent money you will ever spend.

I did extensive research and based on everything I needed. 50 page document feeder, speed (21 pp) and customer service. I went with Brother. I have been very upset with my results from customer service at HP. Brother answered all my questions and some questions I did not think to ask. I love the paper sensors in the trays so my Edocs go to the right paper size. All three have PCL6 emulator and there has been NO Edocs from any format that I have not been able to print. One time in a month end crunch I had my husband try to print out the Edocs at his office on their Xerox $10,000 printer/copier and all I got was garbage when they printed and they did not go to the right size paper tray. We tried on another office printer (Brother) and it worked perfect.

Thank you Margaret for all your feedback! You have helped confirm my decision to go with a Brother. I have 3 HP's that I have not been happy with so it is time for a change. I will probably buy the Brother-HL 5150 DLT with both paper trays. Thank you again!

Margaret: I just purchased the Brother 5150DLT. I am having a hard time printing from both of my trays, letter & legal. I called Brother customer service and they told me that it does not have the capabilities to sense the paper size. I have E-docs from e-lynx and they print to the first tray only. Are the paper sensors an option or am I doing something wrong? I need help from anyone out there!!
Thanks to all.

Hi Pat, I am going to agree with Mr.Negrete, I recently purchased the HP 3015 for $298. at Office Depot, and i didn't want an all-in-one either. Though I find myself using the copier part of it quite a bit. I absolutely love it......... It has handled all the business I've gotten with no problems at all. I mainly use it as a Printer Only! It has printer language of PCL6 naturally. From what I've learned some programs and loan packages won't work with PCL language that is driver emulatted. Anyhow hope that helps, goodluck.
