Too many notaries?

I read at this site there are 4.5 million notaries in the USA. Add 400,000 newbies this summer. That makes 4,900,000 notaries.
The population in the us at this moment is 293,837,526
A little calculation shows that we have 1 notary for every 60 people.
Were will this end? Will we have 10 million notaries in 2 years from now? Or 20 million?

I agree, when I first joined Notary Rotary there were only 3 notaries covering the same counties in Oklahoma that I do, now there are between 20 & 26 depending on how you search. Most of them newbies as far as I can tell.

Re: Too many notaries? KEEP THE FAITH

My sister was telling me and a massage therapist friend of mine that when she first started out as a skin care technician (facialist) and went on to study in Europe her trade, there was only one of her in her little town of Ojai. Today there is a spa on every corner. The same for the massage therapist. But we all agreed that not all are created equally, and not everyone is in the top 10! I know that this applies to our industry as well, as I'm busy cleaning up a lot of messes made by others in my counties.

Re: Too many notaries? KEEP THE FAITH

I Guess you are right. Anyway I will be joining the business this month but I won't be a big competitor in the loan signing business since I will only use it as an added service for my clients in my Income Tax Service in San Diego

Re: Too many notaries? KEEP THE FAITH

Why are you all acting like you own this business. Everything is growing around us. I use to be the only hispanic realtor in my area. When I left there was so much competition.I wasn't special anymore.
There could be a lot of people doing the same thing, but, as long as you give good and professional service, you will be ok.
I always try to do the best that I do. And, more if I can.
Yesterday, I had to go to a maternity hospital. My borrower went into labor same day of signing. I went to the hospital and waited in between for nurses and the baby being photographed. I actually enjoyed it. I don't think about what competition I have out there. Yes, it is nice to have money. But, what I am saying is, you will be remembered for the heart that you put into it. And, always be yourself. You will see a lot of newcomers come and go.But, those that do their job seriously and well will stay on and make more money.

Irma is correct...Keep the Faith

I agree with Irma, I had an individual call me to notarize some papers that he had paid another mobile notary $25 and she did not even complete and sign the certification, she just put her stamp on it and took the money. Well, I told him where he could go since it was a small deal if he did not want to paid the money again to get the paperwork redone properly and he appreciated and referred 3 others to me who winded up having small claims paperwork that needed notarization and those 3 clients paid more than the one guy that I directed elsewhere.

Irma recounted:

"Yesterday, I had to go to a maternity hospital. My borrower went into labor same day of signing. I went to the hospital and waited in between for nurses and the baby being photographed."

I can hear the conversation with the title company now: "Well, you see, the borrower's water broke just as I was getting the documents out of my briefcase on the floor, and........"

Re: Too many notaries? KEEP THE FAITH

It was funny though how that day when she was still in labor, the company wanted me to go to her. I pictured myself there helping her to breath and having my hand squeezed. Well, the title company will pay me double for going there. I hope they will keep their promise.

Unfortunately, however, a lot of companies just go for the cheapest price rather than the best reputation. Eventually, though, the market should balance out. I'm hopeful.

Re: Too many notaries? I HAVE LOTS OF FAITH

You are sooooo right. Signing companies often go for the lowest price.
Just to gain experience I will do my first 100 signings for $40, or if necessary, for $30 or $20.
I'm sure I will gain experience quickly and if still doesn't go fast enough, I do it just for $0.40 per mile or so. I'm also sure that in a year or so the market will be stable again, BUT I WILL BE THERE WITH EXPERIENCE.

"BUT I WILL BE THERE WITH EXPERIENCE"

And there will still be thousands of other notaries with more experience than you and much better business sense than you.

If I were a signing service and had a notary offering to work for me for $30 per signing, I would immediately assume that they were so crappy that they couldn't even get the bare minimum standard payment in the industry, and I wouldn't touch you with a 10 foot pole. And the ones that would hire you are the ones most likely to stiff you for payment.

I agree, as a signing service I would avoid anyone offering to work for less than $50 - even the $50 ones I am sceptical of. Shows a definite lack of experience.
