As Public Officials
Quandary
You walk into the borrowers home to do the signing, the smell of POT almost knocks you back out the door, as you walk towards the signing table (in dinning room past living room) you spot POT on the coffee table and half naked, filthy children sitting in front of the TV. House is a filthy mess from your observation point and looks like it hasnt had a good cleaning in a month. If not for the POT smell, you could probably smell other foul oders ommiting from the kitchen, but didnt dare look. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?? (yes this did happen to me last night. and the borrowers knew I was coming)

You can report them anonymously and the social services HAS to make an in-person impromptu visit to the home. Please do so for the kids. It may actually be the best thing that ever happens to the parents as well as it might just be the wake up call they need.

I did make a report to DHS first thing this morning, Perhaps I should have mentioned that. In Oklahoma it is unlawful not to report something of this nature. My question was What would you have done.

Reported them...people who do drugs are dumb and their children should not have to suffer at their hands.

Not only that report them to Dyface(not sure of spelling) and while you're at it --DON'T DO THE SIGNING.
Against the law to even see alcohol bottle at the signing table.

Yes, I would have reported
I would have given a report to Child Protective Services.
I don't think pot in itself is bad. But the "naked, filthy children" and "house a filthy mess" would have prompted me to make the call.
Children should be protected from neglectful parents.

Can people "under the influence" even take and oath? Legally, you can't even get a marriage license in the state of Ohio if you are under the influence. I would have made a U-turn, walked out, called whoever hired me to say I could not give someone, obviously under the influence, an oath and this signing needed to be done in an office. Then I wouldn't have waited until the next morning to call Children's services, I would have made a beline to the Police Department to report child endangerment.
And for those of you who think Pot should be legal, who cares. The children were not being taken care of and it was obviously a contributing factor.

This is one of those situations that would have put my mind into shock and I would have probably smiled and nodded my way through it, except that Lawrence has posted it now. What a shock.
Now that it has been brought to mind, if it happens to me, and I can safely get myself out of the situation, I will likely do as Joan has suggested and get out as quickly as possible and make the call to CPS asap.
However, being in Lawrence's position and taking it on cold, I would have done the signing and called the next morning after sorting out the situation.
These are the kinds of things I see as a real benefit from posting and reading forums.
