Full time notary work?

Is it really possible to get checks in the mail, daily? I'm new at this, having only done 6 signings. I work full time for a Dr. (front office) and am miserable. I am doing my signings evenings and weekends. I would like to do notary work full time. Any input will be helpful.

There are many variables involved as to whether this is something you want to consider full time, not the least of which is what state/city you're in and how saturated the area may already be with signing agent notaries.
Investing in the proper office equipment (pc, cell phone, fax, copier, laser printer), having a very reliable car and at least 18 months of backup income before you take the plunge into self-employment. Remember you'll
be responsible for paying your own taxes (and retirement) as well. Ongoing marketing efforts to ss, title companies is also a must. Finally, sifting though all the companies out there and deciding which ones are a pleasure to work with versus having to chase down your money for months with others is a learning experience. It's a big step, but the freedom is very worthwhile and there's a lot of support on boards like this, GMN, and the Signing Registry. The latter will even match you up with a mentor to get you going. Just be very certain you are thoroughly familiar with your state notary laws and establish the quality of your work with the companies. Good luck and don't ever take a $40 signing.

It's pretty tough

I've been a full-time NSA in two states. It's pretty tough. And I have 2 college degrees + 20 years experience in real estate law firms.

I call the Secretary of State - notary dept - in my state around once a month for esoteric questions. She told me last week that she considered me one of the top notaries in the state. That's how good you have to be in some areas to make it as a full-timer.

Roger gave excellent advice. Working as a NSA can be done. Roger and I are doing it, after all. Don't underestimate his advice about having 18 months of living expenses in the bank before leaping into full time.

I worked for doctors in my youth. I absolutely hated it so you have lots of sympathy from me. The arrogance is very annoying. And they are so cheap! Plus when people are sick, they can be unpleasant to deal with as patients.

You might research ideas for other self-employment work at the "Work At Home Mom" websites. (You don't have to have kids.) Some good sites:
www.iVillage.com
www.BizyMoms.com
www.DrLaura.com - the work at home part. No comment on rest.

Avoid MLM (multilevel marketing) companies. Usually a rip-off.

With your medical office background, medical transcriptionist might be an idea. Some good money to be made there.

Good luck!

Re: It's pretty tough

f/t sa, could you please email me privately? I'd like to interview you for a profile in a notary newsletter. I'll explain more in detail if you email.

Roger and I have both been around for a long time and we've got huge client bases built up. I'd say it's tough to start out now but it really is dependent upon your circumstances and the area you live in.

I agree it is possible...but it takes a long time to build up a client base- and I work looooong days...Between ongoing marketing and handling signings, smoozing, and keeping all supplies going - following up on calls, making calls, mapping directions, getting my packages ready, checking, my short days are 12 hours....since there is always something to do in between signings - including the bookkeeping. I also have a bookkeeping and tax practice to keep income flowing - since the signing business has its peaks and valleys. I have been doing this full time for 3 years and part time before that....It is not an easy business...but like any business - it is what you make of it...If your area is not saturated - and you work hard and build solid relationships, you can make a full time living....But, it does take time...so you'll need income to survive until you get to the point where you can make the income you need. Best of luck to you
