California Notary Fees

Cal Gov Code says $10 max per sig (acknowledgement), but people I've talked to say they've been charged $20 and $25. Am I reading the Cal Code incorrectly?

Since I was a California notary also, I think that I am qualified to answer that. It is $10/signature if the person came to you and no travelling was done in your part, however, if you travelled to the borrower/signer's home, sky is the limit as long as the borrower/signer agrees to pay your travel fees.

You are right though in saying that some notaries charge $20 even when you are the one who went to their house. I paid as much as $25 before I became a notary. In California, that is considered illegal. You can pay them, get a receipt and report them. The SOS would like to hear something like that...but only if you have seen them performing sych acts or have proof to prove that the action has taken place.
