Fedex
I have never had an issue with Fedex leaving my doc packages until today. They did not leave the package and left a note that I could pick it up from their hub 45 minutes away.
When the SS called to find out if they would attempt again on Thursday they said yes but it would between the hours of 10am and 4pm? My apt. is at 1:30.
Has anyone had this type of problem with Fedex, UPS, or DHL/Airborne Express?

I signed a "release" with Fed Ex. It gives them permission to leave packages at the door and releases them of any "harm" if the package gets stolen when I am not home to get the package dircectly from the driver. Hope this helps.

If the sender did not sign the shipping label to allow delivery without a signature, then the Fed Exp person would have left a note. If the label was signed... then they should have left it at your door.

In addition to the "release" , Loretta referred to, I have a covered plastic bin "Wallmart/Target" on my front porch. I have a signed, laminated letter on the top addressed to FEDEX, UPS and AIRBORNE advising the driver of the release and requesting that packages be placed in the bin. Never had a problem.

Signing a release form wasn't as easy for me. I signed a release form three different times because they kept "misplacing them". But, after signing the third release, everything has been fine.

Bob-Chicago, You and I must do a lot of thinking along the same lines. I have one of those boxes myself. And, in addition, I have the letter laminated to the top. I put a couple of signed release forms (I generated them) inside just in case when I am expecting a drop off. It makes Miss Dog absolutely nutty if I don't get out there before they touch her box...especially if she is catching a moment of ZZZZZ's when one of those newer models of the UPS truck slips up on her before she can do the Official Security Bark and Spin.

Re: You know what they say...
I have never had to sign a release with any shipping company. When I leave I just put a laminated sign on my door that says "DRIVER LEAVE PACKAGES BEHIND SCREEN DOOR". They do it all the time in my area. I come and go all day, but I also have older neighbors who look out for everyone in the neighborhood.

It couldn't hurt
Filing a release is easy This time of year fedex and ups have lots of temp drivers.

Re: You know what they say...
I probably did not say that I had releases on file with FEDEX in my post above, but I do. It usually shows up on the package if I am not able to sign for the package. This will not work for some packages which contain medications or insured items--so I have been told.
They have cracked down on this requirement at some point within the last year with me. My neighbors are also in business for themselves and receive sensitive documents or insured packages. With dated/written permission in our courier drops (i.e., big plastic boxes from Wal-mart) the drivers allow us to accept sign for and accept each other's packages when a signature must be collected. I don't know if there is a policy on this, though.

I had a strange thing happen with Fedex. They left my package in a plastic bag hanging from the flag on my mailbox. Never had that happen before.
