I just bought the Brother HL 5140 this afternoon, it will handle the job. Although it's not dual tray, I print on all legal paper anyway.

I have been looking for a dual tray printer also. My experience has been that some loan documents do not print unless you have the 2 trays. Most do, but it is a shame to miss signing since your printer does not have that option.

I have no problems printing any docs on legal size paper in the single tray, now 2 sided printing is another story.

A nice and reasonable dual tray printer is the HP Laserjet 1300. Shop around for it, even though HP discontinued that model (in favor of the 1320) on Oct. 31st. It doesn't do automatic duplexing, but that's not a problem.
As far as files not printing on single tray printers, that isn't a problem either. Even if the file has the "switch tray" commands embedded in the file, a single tray printer will just ignore the command and keep on printing from the tray it has. Use all legal and there will be no worries.

Re: printers dual tray
Thank you for the information. I did not make myself clear as far as printing. I believed that it was the program that the lender used which would not open since I did not have dual tray. Most title or lenders send in PDF files, which is not a problem. All the files which are recorded with the county should be on letter size and not legal.

Re: printers dual tray
Which lender? What program were you using? Did it specifically ask whether you had dual tray capability, to which you responded NO? I don't see where it makes any difference whether you have dual tray capability or not. If the lender insists on having the mortgage/DOT and other docs on letter, then the instructions should so state. There are other ways of doing that, like printing those pages separately on letter or cutting them to size with a paper cutter.

I think Simone was saying for recording purposes in California, that it is the County and not the lender that won't accept legal-size docs.

Re: Recording
Actually, the county WILL accept legal size docs, they just charge more for it. They are set up for 8 1/2 X 11, anything else, larger or smaller, and they charge more money. This is the main reason that some companies want the DOT on letter size paper.

Re:Printers & Recording
Thank you all for all the very good respones that were giving. all the issue that got me to this issue of buying this printer way rised and answered, the ? was asked what program won't open if a sensor dual tray isn't available, the one that didn't open for me was LSSI LSD Viewer, after loading the program, viewing the doc's I started print and they wouldn't print, an error message, I tried changing the paper size won't work so, I call the company LSSI and they explain, that I need a sensor daul tray. a printer with a program sensor that will tell the printer when to print on legal and when to print letter , they want there Mortgage only on letter and other forms.

Re: Re:Printers & Recording
First time I've ever heard of a software program checking for a dual tray printer with sensor. You said, "started print and they wouldn't print, an error message, I tried changing the paper size won't work". For my information and files, what was the error message? Where did the message appear?

Re: Re:Printers & Recording
I too have printer woes. I bought a Brother HL-5150DLT. It duplexes like a charm. Has dual trays too, BUTTTTTTTTT it can't decipher in a package of documents which s/be on letter or legal. It will print legal or letter with stand alone docs.
I've spoken to Brother and sooo many others. Some say the author of the docs has to differenciate ltr or legal. Brother says their printer cannot decipher.
Although both trays work, in a "package" of docs it cannot deferenciate..doesn't make sense I know. There is one Notary who can print using her Brother 5050 and it knows when to use Legal and when not to, she said a programmer came over and downloaded something and that's why it works.
Let me know if anyone comes up w/a fix.

Thank you for the single tray comment. I was beginning to sweat. I am a proponent of the all legal size paper theory and will gladly cut.
I am not quite ready to buy yet another stylish printer to adorn my decor with...sometimes, less is more in matters of mixing accent pieces with HP shades of putty and muted tones.
All the while (but, of course!) when using a lighter shade of Cannon Image Class Ivory to lift the mood of the room AND the eyes to expanded dimensions of space-taking electronics.
Adding texture to the collection with drapings of various misprinted leaves of legal and letter size litter tossed haphazardly aside is truly a decorating bonus for the notary's home hideaway.
