Need some computor help, Please
Have a computer problem: first have a Sony Vaio- 700 MHZ, 512 SD Memory, SDRAM, and windows 98, for computer. Plus have a fax – business class/Laser Fax brother intellFax 4100 (only month old) hook to computer so I can copy or print.
Problem: got a signing to day, first the signing company emailed me 3 emails with files to download, which I down loaded and save on my desk top, and printed. Then the mortgage company had me go to there wed site put in a password, came up a download, I install the printer capability then I press download it downloaded on my desktop and then I went up to file the printer set up to make sure it was legal size then pressed print. I waited looked over to my fax/Printer and it said working, wait and waited then it said sleeping my fax says sleeping most of the time other then when I print something, then it start printing so it went to sleep mode . It wouldn’t print. So when my husband came home he started up his computer and went threw the steps and started printing on his small fax machine and it has missing letter on spacing apart the letters. Not so much I am worried about him downloading is me, it seem if I get a PDF file I can print it. Why could I download on desktop but I click on it doesn’t show anything open and it will not print.
Please forgive me I don’t know much about computer.

Please click the Search button. On the search page, enter eLynx as your topic and search for individual messages. In short, you are potentially facing two problems:
1) You might not have the eLynx print utility installed (which is one of several common PCL-based doc viewers), and
2) It's possible that your printer does not support HP's PCL (through emulation) or that it has a poor implementation of the language.
If you are unfamiliar with PCL or e-docs, in general, try searching the forum for PCL. PAW Notary Services is our resident expert and he has addressed the issue many, many times.

To print eLynx formatted files you need the proper print utility **AND** a PCL 5e compliant printer. I do not believe the Brother Intellifax 4100 supports PCL emulation.

Re: Need some computer help, Please (addition)
This strengthens what Paul and I have often said! The right equipment is essential in this business.
To accept edocs you really need to have an HP laser printer, at least a HP1300 (HP1200 works, but they were discontinued I believe) These are the only ones with the HP PCL5 or PCL6 drivers, and this is what is needed to download and print most of the edocs.
I know some people have other brand printers that have worked fine. BUT do you want to take the chance that the other brand you get will work??
The HP1300 is around $300, it really is a small investment to make. It will soon pay for itself!

Re: Need some computer help, Please (addition)
This post is fairly misleading. An HP printer is not a necessity to print edocs.
I have a Brother 8220 and haven't had a single problem printing edocs. I can't remember ever seeing a post in this group about somebody with a non HP PCL 5 or 6 printer who was unable to print docs. I've seen it suggested many times, but that's about it.
Some people like HP printers, some people think they're crap. But it's been shown in here time and time again that non HP PCL5 or PCL6 printers seem to do the job just as well.

I don't think it is misleading at all. Sylvia stated, "I know some people have other brand printers that have worked fine. BUT do you want to take the chance that the other brand you get will work??"
To be able to accept edoc assignments, I think we all agree that PCL is required. And some companies are specifying PCL5e at a minimum. Hewlett-Packard created and licenses PCL and is the only printer manufacturer to natively support PCL on most of their laser printers while other manufacturers support PCL through emulators.
I personally have not seen proof of a failure when printing edocs on a non-HP printer, but have seen posted problems being reported. I, as well as many others, including Sylvia, have seen people report no problems with using a non-HP printer. The point that Sylvia was making is that sometime, some company may incorporate a PCL command or function that is not supported in the emulated version. If this happens, there is no recourse for the user with the printer manufacturer. However, if the problem happens on a HP PCL compliant printer, then HP can and will fix the problem.
I would venture to say, that typically there should be no problems using a non-HP PCL compliant printer since most documents are pretty vanilla PCL. I've only had one document set that was not vanilla and was told that I **must** use an HP PCL5e or PCL6 laser printer because there was some embedded HPGL (graphics) in the file. This was not a standard loan document set, but survey maps and title information. I honestly don't know if a non-HP PCL compliant printer would be able to print the documents or not, as I do use HP products.
I also agree that "some people like HP printers, some people think they're crap." I like HP. I also like Brother, Cannon, Xerox and host of others, but when it comes to PCL, I like to stick with the company that knows it best.
(Sorry for the diatribe.)

CaliNotary:
I am considering getting the Brother MFC8220, it's a recertified printer with a double tray. I wanted to know what you think about it and if you think it is worth the money. I have read a lot about the people that rave about the HP printers but I don't particularly care for those printers. Also I've found that the Brothers are less expensive. Any feedback is appreciated.

Re: Need some computer help, Please (addition)
That's the printer I have and so far I've been pretty happy with it. I've never had any problem printing docs with it.
I found it to be a noisier than my last printer which was extremely quiet. But that's not a big deal to me at all. I don't have the second tray so I couldn't tell you how well that is working. One thing that I didn't realize about this printer is that the scanner feature is black/white only, no color scanning. I don't really care about the scanner, but some people might.
The toner cartridges are extremely easy to refill on this machine. Just pop out the plastic plug, empty the remaining toner in the cartridge, and dump in the new toner. A cartridge has been lasting me about 3-4 weeks. God bless tonerkits.com or it would cost a fortune. I've had the printer for about 5 months and it recently is giving the message that the drum needs to be replaced soon. I don't know the technical specifics, but basically the toner apparatus consists of 2 parts, the toner cartridge and the drum. The toner cartridge fits into the larger apparatus which contains the drum, and that needs to be replaced much less frequently than the toner.
I think I paid about $280 for it at Fry's.

This is another one of those *how you interpret it posts* -- Yes, I agree that HP printers are the only ones with PCL drivers, however, I disagree if you are saying that 1200 and 1300 printers are the only ones with PCL5 or PCL6 drivers. I have two HPIII's and one HP4V printers -- all three are HP workhorses, laser, commercial duty and the HPIII's are PCL5 and the HP4V is PCL5e. The HPIII's were made in the late 80's and early 90's ande the HP4V was made in 1996, in an era when printers were not made of plastic -- they weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. I've had several opportunities of using today's lasers, and I wouldn't trade any of my antiques for one of them.

That's not what she said, or at least meant. The "minimum" HP printer that supports PCL5e/6 is the HP 1300 (used to be 1200). These (meaning HP printers, not just the 1200 and 1300) are the only ones with the PCL drivers {natively}.
Most HP Laser printers support PCL at varying levels depending on their age. Some of the older printers have updated drivers for PCL5e and 6. Some of the lower end HP printers use GDI or host based printing and the newer ones are sporting a combination of GDI and PCL emulation.

Off the showroom floor, the drivers in my antiques are PCL5 and PCL5e.

I have the Brother 1440 and it does not print eLynx docs. It is not a PCL 5 or 6 compiant printer. I have had to turn down only 1 signing thus far for not being able to print the docs, PDF files work and print just fine. Ask them if they can send it to you in PDF format instead. BK-FL

Who is the lender and/or what website did you use to pick up the docs? I have a POS (think Adam Sandler car song) Samsung printer but, have found many ways around the whole PCL thing. You may just need to change your printer settings to "windows based" print mode. Or, you may need to open the docs in the view mode and print from the view mode.
I don't know that much about computers and printers but, like I said, I have learned how to get around the PCL thing due to desperation. If you have a phone number for the doc site tech help use it. I have found the tech help lines very helpful.
