Della,

I'll take a shot at this for you...here's a place to start: I looked on the HP site and came up with a couple of links that might help you.

About your XP upgrade...This is "Brenda talking," and not something from HP: When you installed XP, if you did an upgrade, and not a complete new installation of Windows XP, I cannot say that I blame you. . .

However, on some computers, doing an upgrade rather than backing up your info and doing a clean install of XP (re-formatting your harddrive) can cause things like this to happen--don't know why, but I just know from doing many, many installations of XP and doing many, many upgrades from ME or 98 to XP that a clean install will give you a better foundation to build on. If you continue to have problems, you might want to consider that after exhausting other resources for solutions.

Another problem could be your BIOS is slightly incompatible with XP since you have a computer which is old enough to have ME on it. Please understand, I am not knocking the age of your computer, because I believe in using them until the last drop, and I don't notice that much difference between a P3 and a P4. However, you might need to upgrade your BIOS to get the best performance of your computer now that it has XP. But, let's go with the easiest solution first and try to do a thorough removal of the HP drivers/software for your printer and see if reinstalling will cure it.

I have had several HP Printers. When they start acting up like yours is, I believe it is because the printer/driver files are corrupt. All hard drives have unusable areas on them. If this is the original hard drive in your computer, you may have lots of little areas that are not cooperating because hard drives can get more bad spots on them as they age.

It usually does not cure a problem with HP printers to simply reinstall the software for the printer.

You have reinstalled, however, some of the printer driver files are still lurking on your harddrive and ruining the fresh installation of the printer files --that's my guess.

HP knows that you cannot completely remove all the HP files by using the control panel, or the uninstall program you can probably access in your programs menu. I say this, because they have a "scrubber" to make sure all the drivers are cleaned up and all files are deleted before you try to reinstall the printer software/drivers.

I'll caution you to use my experience and loss of time and to patiently go through the routine HP says to do, step-by-step to uninstall then reinstall. Even if you did do it right the first time by HPs directions, after an upgrade of the operating system (ME to XP) you may have files that are written all over the disk or corroded ever so slightly which will start some yucky things to flare up.

Good luck!

If you continually have "spooler subsystem" problems, it more than likely is an upgrade from ME to XP problem. Unfortunately, as Brenda said, upgrades aren't really a new installation of the software, and a lot of incompatible pieces get left over. The issue has plagued more people than you may think. At any rate, as much as I hate to say it, installing Service Pack 2 for XP may cure the problem. There is a long and drawn out process to delete and reinstall in the printer subsystem, which involves deleting and manually adding back many files and editing the system registry. I don't know the doc number (on the Microsoft site) for this process though.

You need to completely uninstall the printer first. It can get pretty entailed, but follow the HP directions to completely uninstall the printer and drivers. (You may have to download the instructions from the HP web site.)

Do you have any other printer installed on the PC? If so, can you print to it without problems?

Try installing a "Generic/Text only" printer. Set it to print "to file" and try printing something simple to it. If you have spooler problems with that, then there is something wrong with the XP setup.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the link I posted earlier would uninstall the printer.

Della,

I also have Windows XP and recently installed a new HP1300 printer without any problems. I can't imagine the problem is with either the XP or the printer.
