Alternative Closing Locations

I have a signing scheduled for next week and the borrower has requested an alternative closing location other than his business, I have not spoken with the borrower as of yet to confirm and set a location, I got his answering machine today. The closing is scheduled for 9am. I can only think of a very slow restaurant, a small diner, or a coffee shop, however all locations involve possible spillage of beverages, any other suggestions? A library would work.

CaliNotary promised, with respect to alternative closing locations:

***A library would work.***

Don't count on it. Austin librarians kick us out.

That is good suggestion, but I hope they don't kick us out for talking! Thank you! BK-FL

Brenda are there any atriums near you??

Nothing near the borrowers address or area. Atriums down here are usually located in office building or condo entrances and are usually locked anyways. Good suggestion though, thank you. BK-FL

I was even thinking about closing at a FedEx Kinkos! Has anyone ever conducted a closing there before? Seems to me it would be a good place since they have tables and chairs and we can talk! Copy machines available for the DL copy requirement! Too bad they want it shipped back UPS! BK-FL

Re: Alternative Closing Locations-I've had 3, recently

I have used my "Winnebago" Rialta, which is a small RV. It is a little bit larger than a conversion van and gets great mileage. Has all the comforts of home with a table and 2 comfortable bench type seats. I met the Borrowers in a parking lot convenient to their work, and we did the signing there. First time I used it was for a couple that came over to the "Mainland" from one of the islands on the ferry. It was an hour and a half ride for them each way. No car, wasn't needed there. I mentioned this to another borrower a few days later when I called to confirm and he wanted an alternative location. He liked the idea plus it saved me quite a driving distance to his home. 3rd one within 2 weeks, same situation. Every once in a while I like to take the RV out on the road rather than let it "sit" in the driveway until I go on my next trip. I'm not suggesting purchasing one if you don't already have it, but even a conversion van works. As long as you remember to clean the PB & J off the table before you spread out the documents.

The local Starbuck's Coffee Shop is located inside a Barnes & Noble Book Store. I usually go there. If the borrower isn't in my immediate area I suggest a food court at a nearby shopping mall.

I have boycotted Starbucks since 9-11. Starbucks charged the firefighters and rescue workers for cases of water they needed to care for the victims of that horrible day. True Starbucks did eventually reimburse the fire company and men however at the time of the actual incident they were still thinking of only the mighty buck! Therefore I have boycotted everything Starbucks, but the Barnes and Noble or a book store is a good suggestion. Thank you! BK-FL

ID Caution

When a borrower suggests not signing at home or work, I look at ID extra carefully
BTW, I use libraries a lot. Apparently I am less obtrusive than Hugh.
McDonalds/Burger King also good. They don't seem to notice even if you don't buy anything. If you have to, buy a small coffee. Sit in the back.

My guess is that you look less like a homeless bum than I

I have found that a fast food restaurant works better than a Denny's or other similar restaurant because they are less concerned about you taking up a table.

You might want to avoid dinner time though as it isn't very private. I usually let the borrower make a suggestion before I give my thoughts.

Thank you all for your great suggestions and comments. The borrower as chosen to close at his friends office located in the general vicinity, so that works for me. Now I have great suggestions and ideas for the next time this situation arises. ID will be copied and closely inspected, thanks for the heads up! BK-FL
