home inspector

I was reading the above thread regarding home appraiser. I was just curious as to what it takes to become a home inspector. I have seen a couple of job ads, where they were looking for home inspectors.

Google is your friend. I'm sure you can find all the answers you need there and don't need us to spoon feed it to you.

I was curious about becoming a "home inspector" and found that "google" has tons of information about it and it somewhat confuses people who want to get information, especially if you do not know that the information is correct.
Sometimes people need it spoon fed to them. Just like the new notaries that need help, can get it on this forum.

But this isn't a home inspection forum. If a person needs the info spoon fed to them they should at least find an appropriate forum for it. Where is a person more likely to get correct info - in a home inspection forum or a notary forum? I'm sure there are some specific message boards that can give way better info than anyone could hope to get in here.

Jay,
I hope you find what you need but some questions are not welcomed here.
You will have to find a home inspector forum on google.
I, for one, will find out what I can for you, as a courtesy because you asked for the help thinking that someone on this forum would help you.

This is not an abstractor forum or an appraiser forum but I have found many of them here. Abstracting, appraisals and notaries work hand in hand. I own my own abstracting business and I have met plenty of people that give me lots of good ideas for side jobs or even a side business that I have started because of websites like this.
I find that the first thing that the majority of the notaries want to learn to do after they get a good taste of the mortgage business, is to become an abstractor.

CaliNotary,
Thanks so much for pointing out that this is not a forum of home inspectors. I am sure most of us were unaware of that and can sleep better tonight. I am sure Jay was just curious to know if there was anyone in the forum that were both NSA and Home Inspector and how the two mesh. Many NSA have additional services that they provide in addition to NSA work and I am sure Jay was hoping for a response from someone who was currently doing both and could give him some advice as opposed to your witless comment about Google.

You know what they say, give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime. I'm a believer in the latter and when people post questions that they could easily find the answers to if they just put a little effort into it, I will try to make them put forth that effort.

Which is better for Jay - to wait and hope that he gets a response from somebody who is doing both, or to do an easy google search that would likely give him all the information he could ask for?

I agree with what you are saying. I am quite cognizant of the fact, that there are other media that I can use. However, it would not hurt to ask if anyone on this site had anything to offer in regards to my quest. As you can surely see, I did receive just that. In addition, it was also the way in which your answer came across. It came across as somewhat condescending and abrupt.

Dear CaliNotary,
First as you can see, there were many different individuals who were in the position to help(spoon-feed as you would suggest).
Secondly, I found it appropriate to mention home inspectors, as one of the threads mentioned the prospects of this field.
Please refrain from answering threads with remarks that will hurt someone's feelings. Especially if it is not necessary and evidently your comment was uncalled for, as proven in this instance. Thank you very much and have a nice day!!!!

Dear Jay,

If your feelings were hurt by me telling you to search on Google for the answer to your question and the comment "spoon fed" , let me kindly suggest that you grow a set of ****s and grow up and act like a man. That's pretty darn wimpy dude.

And all I saw were people directing you to other places to find the answer you were looking for which is pretty much exactly what I did.

Response to CaliNotary's remark

CaliNotary,
You have proven yourself to be lacking in the people skills department from your previous post. Now with this new post you have shown this a much deeper personality flaw. I think Jimmy Buffett said it best when he wrote" Were you born an ass&%$e or did you work at it your whole life".
Try having a little patience with people who post the occassional question that you feel does not belong on this board. This is not your board to dictate content so next time someone posts something you feel is questionable stop and count to 10! If you feel the urge to respond and your response is not notary related then perhaps you should not post a response as it will most likely to bring that great Jimmy Buffett tune to the mind of all that read it.

Re: Response to CaliNotary's remark

Paul, my people skills are just fine. But I call things as I see them, and when somebody says that they got hurt feelings because I posted "Google is your friend. I'm sure you can find all the answers you need there and don't need us to spoon feed it to you", then yes, I'm going to call them a wimp because anybody who would get their feelings hurt by that IS a wimp and should really not be on public message boards if their sensibilites are that freaking delicate.

As for me having the nerve to expect this person to do their own research, it does get old having people post questions in here that make it quite clear that they didn't even attempt to find the answer on their own. It took me about 3 seconds to find this link on google:

http://www.homeinspections-usa.com/main/insp/home_inspection_organizations/Florida

the search terms I used : how to become a home inspector florida, it showed up right on the first page of search results. I haven't gone through all of the links on the page, but it looks like they link to various Florida home inspection sites PLUS a link that says "become a home inspector". Easy easy easy, yet he didn't even bother to do that much.

It has nothing to do with me trying to dictate the content on this board, it's just my blunt way of reminding people that they should be doing their own research, especially when it's not even related to the subject of this message board. And it wasn't even that blunt, all I said was "you don't need us to spoon feed it to you" which is pretty much exactly what he was asking us to do. If pointing out the obvious makes me an asshole then so be it.

I do have to say that I just love the irony of you calling me an asshole in the very same post that you're taking me to task on how I spoke to someone else on the board. You think I'm an asshole so you called me one, I thought he was a wimp so I called him one. What's the difference? Why is it ok for you to do it but not for me to do it?

Re: Response to CaliNotary's remark

Glad you think your people skills are just fine. I am also thrilled that you are so internet savy that you can use google effectively. I am sure Jay also knew how to use google but decided to inquire to see if someone had any personal knowledge that did not come from google as there are so many people on this board who do other things in addition to NSA work. I am also sure he may have tried google on his own in addition to asking for a personal recomendation.

Re: Response to CaliNotary's remark

If he had asked for personal experiences or a recommendation to a good message board or something I might agree with you. But he asked "I was just curious as to what it takes to become a home inspector". I wasn't responding to what his intent might have been or what was going on in his head, I was responding to what he actually posted. And what he posted was a request for simple information that he could have found on his own in less than a minute.

But I'm glad that you're sure that you know what was going on in Jay's head. Unfortunately I don't have the same mind reading skills and can only go by what I see here.

You are just way to easy and full of yourself. As far as knowing what is in Jays head I just perfer to give someone the benefit of the doubt. Something which you obviously are unfamiliar. Well enough said on this thread.

In one respect, home inspector rules are like notary rules;
they vary from state to state. First, I would think about
what is going to happen if you miss something important
and on your advise, someone buys a house and then
has to do $50,000 worth of unexpected repairs.

If that does not scare you off, research on the web by
phone the state organization, if any, that regulates
home inspectors in your state.

As a licensed professional engineer in Vermont, I'm
allowed to do home inspections, but I don't feel
comfortable doing them because I mostly know
about electricity. I won't do them unless I somehow
have an opportunity to round out my experience.

I am not sure about other states, but AR has a Home Inspection Board in the Capital Building. They require a 125.00 fee paid to the board and require the applicant to take the National Home Inspector Test. If you pass the test you are good to go. However you do have to carry E&O Insurance in AR, that is a requirement. However I am not sure what your specific state regulations are.
