Cheryl_NV Questions about taxes deductions

First let me tell you I am from Quebec (Canada). This is why I do not get it very fast lol. I would like to be very honest with the IRS like I always did in Quebec. However I do not want to give them one penny they should not have. I never worked in USA. I would like to build my Social Security for when I retired. I am guessing the best thing for me is to have someone to do my taxes for me, at least for the first year. I heard something about I have to work for 10 years at least, so many quarters ect.. What if I have only one signing this week at 125.00 $ (I am a newbie). Can you direct me to some website or phone numbers where I can understand more. Do you do taxes for people for a fees? It is going to be for next year but you know I have to begin right now to keep all my receipts ect.. Excuse my english but my first language is french. I would take answer from everybody that knows about it also. thank you to all of you

Address your questions to Jon, Cheryl. He is a tax consultant, and is most generous with his expertise. When you post directed to him, please tell him I have not forgotten that I owe him a consultation fee.

For a person who's first language is French...

Your spelling of the English language is commendable. Perhaps Erna could take a lesson.

Re: Annie - not so quick!!

Annie,

I wouldn't be too critical of Erna, unless English is your third language as it is for her. (By the way, Icelandic and Norwegian are her first two languages).

Re: Annie - not so quick!! - Erna

The IP address that Annie is posting from is not in Texas, it is a Reno IP address.

IP changer is used by many. Your IP can be anywhere you choose. Is a tool to be used for security but can be used to hide while doing dirty deeds.

Re: Annie - not so quick!!

Erna,

FWIW, I believe you are mistaken about Annie being a Texan. I agree with Sylvia that the poster "Annie" is from NV.

I looked back to see who you were referring to regarding the Texan logged on while Annie appears and there are two: Me and Hugh.

I know it's not me.

So, that leaves Hugh. I know him well enough to know he isn't going to learn how to cloak his IP. All his emails come from the same IP as his bogus post wherein he used the phrase "cereal killer."

You need to have 40 quarters in to collect social security. They are not 40 calendar quarters, it is a formula based on income and time. I think you may be able to find info on this in the Social Security Administration web site. And yes I do, do taxes for a living for about the last 20 years.

For information regarding IRS procedures, go to www.irs.gov and search for the specific questions you have. For info on Ca taxes go to www.ftb.ca.gov and again search. If you would like to speak with me further, post your contact info and I'll call or e-mail you.

I'm re-posting a message I posted in Jan. in regards to taxes.

If this is your first year being self employed, I recommend that you find a tax professional to prepare your taxes. This will help you to make sure that you don't miss any deductions that you should be taking or take deductions that you shouldn't be taking. There are many things to consider when deciding which deductions to take, and there may be instances when you are able to take a deduction, but it is not profitable for you to do so. You may want to depreciate some purchases as opposed to expensing them. A tax professional should be able to answer your questions and explain the different scenarios. After the first year, if you are comfortable, you may want to then consider doing your own taxes.

If you have been self employed for longer than 1 tax year and you still have questions, you should find a tax professional to prepare your taxes. Everyone has the subjects that they are knowledgeable about, if you still have questions, taxes are probably not one of yours. There is nothing wrong with that and remember that the amount you pay for the business portion of your taxes may be deductible. Taxes require a high level of knowledge, even with the software that is now available for computers.

When looking for a tax professional, be sure to ask questions. How much experience do they have with self employed taxpayers? Have they ever done a notary's taxes?(There are considerations for notaries that are not available to everyone else) Are they available year round for any questions that may come up? These types of questions may help you to find a tax professional that is suited more to the needs of a NSA.

I would also suggest that you verify any information you receive on this or any other board with a tax professional, or find the applicable tax code to ensure that the info is correct(including mine Smiley ). I have seen many posts that have either wrong or very misleading information. Your taxes are too important to trust to a message board on the web. Yes you can get some general guidelines and much of the information will be accurate, but unless you can tell the difference between the good and the bad, it doesn't really help you.

Jon,
What is your email, and what state are you in? I too need a good tax person as I have 3 different self employed businesses, none of which brings a ton of money but still need to do my taxes right.
Thanks,
kathy

Re: Bienvenue

Claudia_NJ shames us all by declaring:

***Je ne suis pas Francaise mais je parle Francais aussi. Je suis naturelle de Portugal mais j'habite a New Jersey par 17 ans. Francais et ma deuxième langue et anglais ma troisième.***

Okay, I think I have both the second and the third sentences: You are a native of Portugal [and presumably Portuguese is your first language] and you have lived in New Jersey for 17 years. French is your second language and English is your third. The first says, maybe, "I haven't been to France but I speak French somewhat?"

Help!!!

Re: Bienvenue

I'm not shaming anyone - unless that's what you're into - LOL

You're translation is quite accurate - the first sentence says "I'm not french but I do speak French also"

Yes I am Portuguese and that is my first language, French is my second language, English my third, Italian my fourth and Spanish my fifth, I dabble in German but not enough to say that I'm fluent.

OK, now you should bow!!! (just kidding)

Re: Bienvenue

lol.....

Je suis aussi heureux de vous rencontrer et comme vous je suis le seul notaire dans 20 milles qui parlent français. Vous pouvez dire que j'ai le "marché" à moi-même.

perhaps we should change to english so no one gets offended and starts to think we're talking about them (just kidding)

It is very nice to meet you Doris and I hope to have more of an opportunity to speak with you in the future.
